Talking Chapter historian

Hey, I just got elected to be our chapter's historian Thursday night. But, I have no idea what that office is all about.

in my chapter, the historian takes pictures of all the actives at the activities, parties and get togethers and compiles a scrapbook, both in paper and online.

they also coordinate alumni relations and make a newsletter twice a semester.

last year i was my chapter's publications coordinator (aka historian) i had a blast with the job. i got to be in charge of the scrapbook and the chapter history (written form). i also wrote an article for my sorority's international magazine about our chapter. it's a lot of fun cause you can be creative. one thing the girls in my chapter REALLY liked was that, for the scrapbook, they each got to make a page about themselves. i set up little "scrapbook sisterhoods" where everybody in the house would show up and work on their scrapbook page together. it also helped because that way i didn't have to do everything myself and i wasn't constantly loosing all of my scrapbook supplies.

I am a historian in my house, and the job is quite simple yet require a lot of time commitment. The biggest responsibility is to document everything, that means to take pictures of events, to make scrapbooks, to arrange/rearrange documentations (previous years) and books in the house library.

Our house was founded in 1919 (Iowa State), and I learn a lot of histories of my own house by doing this. It is fun, I like it!
The bad things are that I am required to be around all the time and to be able to document everything. I am not an expert in taking pictures, and sometimes I have problems with this. Oh, well.

Just a question

How did you get elected to a position you know nothing about?

People outside of your org can only give you generic descriptions - your organization should have a more detailed list of your duties - some historians are responsible for archiving and others have more of a publicity role, so it really depends. If it isn't laid out clearly, take the ideas you get from outside your org and run them by your President or Executive Committee so your expectations mesh with theirs! Good luck.

Easy, someone nominated me for the position and I accepted it. I didn't have to give a speech or application because I was the only person nominated. Since we aren't a chapter yet, things aren't that formal.
