Interesting Spring rush at Iowa

I thought it was interesting that for the informal rush informational session they are combining the NPC, MGC and NPHC sororities. My understanding is most of the NPC sororities are at or close enough to total that they're not doing a semi-structured informal. So some will be holding an informal rush but it's not a huge thing. That's good news for the campus! I think it's getting back to its previous strength .

Spring Sorority Open House!
Every new semester brings new challenges, experiences, and friendships. This spring the University of Iowa Sorority Life wants to help students in making something deeper than just new friendships; we want to help making new sisters! If you are a woman on campus who hasn't joined or considered Greek Life yet, now is your opportunity! There will be PHC, MGC, and NPHC sororities at the Spring Sorority Open House for you to meet and express your interest in. From 7-9 on Thursday, January 26th the sororities on campus that are still recruiting this spring will be meeting in the Lucas-Dodge room on the second floor of the IMU. Only sororities that aren't currently at total will be present.

Besides the grammar issues, why on earth would they include that last line? It doesn't mean anything to most PNM's, and makes the chapters seem less desirable to the ones who do know what 'total' is.

I noticed it too. I'm thinking they wanted to say that not every NPC sorority will be in attendance, but it does start to back-pedal on alleviating the stigma of informal rush.

As far as I know, every NPC chapter at Iowa was at total except one and maybe a 2nd one in the fall, so any recruitment is due to attrition. Unfortunately, attrition is a problem so there are more spots open than I think should be.

And yes, how many times do we have to explain the difference between quota and total here? It is a confusing concept to a lot of people and I think there could have been a better way to say not all sororities will be participating. Or leaving it completely unsaid. It is just an informational session after all. Would it kill the girls to learn that upon arrival?

Changing subject, is it common for NPHC sororities to participate in this sort of mass session?
