Which do you prefer to use/say?

CHRISTmas OR X-mas?

Do you find it offensive when someone says or uses X-mas instead of actually saying or using CHRISTmas?

I've always said CHRISTmas.

As a young child, growing up in a Christian home, and being a Christian woman now, I use the terminology CHRISTmas. Jesus is definitely the reason for the season thus I find it imperative that we use CHRISTmas opposed to X-mas.

X is a variable and has no meaning. So therefore, I don't use X-mas or even generation x because it negates the meaning and value.

I've always used CHRISTmas, too. I don't care for the "x" spelling.

Well, let me preface this by saying I got this from one of my favorite books, so its not something I researched myself. But I do trust the source.

According to 1001 Facts Somebody Screwed Up by Deane Jordan: "Xmas meaning Christmas has been around for centuries, possibly preceding the word Christmas. Also, it doesn't mean leaving Christ out of Christmas, as some accuse it. "X' is the Greek letter for Christ and was an important symbol of the early chruch."

I like to use Christmas. My mom always said there's enough happening today where folks are trying to take God out of everything (schools, etc.) without you taking the Christ outta Christmas.

Ok, no hate mail please...but I use both. Using one over the other really doesn't take anything away from Christmas for me. I usually use Xmas when tying an email back and forth to someone, it's just faster....no more no less.

I prefer Christmas. When I attended Howard U. in '94, a friend of mine was making a cake and she was trying to put 'Merry Christmas' on top after she'd applied the icing. I asked her why she didn't use X-Mas b/c it was shorter, and she said that the X crosses Jesus out. That's why I don't like to say or write X-Mas, except for this thread.

I always say Christmas. I had always heard that the other way was a way to take Christ out of Christmas.

I say Christmas since Christ is the focus of the holiday. I really don't get offended when someone says X-mas. Rather, I feel emotions of sorrow..which will normally drive me to explain to them the real focus of the holiday. I want everyone to be able to recognize and be in relationship with Christ...and to have the joy that the composers had when they expressed: "JOY to the world, the Lord has come..let earth receive her king...let every heart..."

Hi all!

As taught by my mininster.

X=Chi

Being Greeks we all know that much.

Back when Christians were still considered a cult, and were getting thrown to the lions; it was dangerous to use the word Christ. So Christians started using Chi=X so that they could still wish each other a Merry X-Mas w/ out getting killed.

I personally never say X-mas. But I have ZERO qualms about writing it. It doesn't cross out Christ; it means Christ.

I think I solved the problem...

if everyone is concerned w/ a fast way to type/write Christmas w/o taking the CHRIST out, why not take out the "mas" and leave the CHRIST. From now on I'm going to start typing and writing "Have a Merry Christ - X".
