Would You Attend...
If the college you went to for undergrad had a graduate school with your major would you attend or would you go somewhere else?
I'm currently attending a school that also has grad level courses but I'm not sure if I want to stay at that same school. My professor is always telling the class to get out and explore, but I've done that for the most part now I feel like settling where I am.
Any advice would be helpful.

Since I am also considering grad schools, I have put some thought into this issue. I am worried that ,if I stay at the same school for grad that I attended for undergrad, it won't show growth and will appear one-dimensional. However, I do know quite a few people who have done so.

I know a lot of people who do integrated (5 year bachelors/masters or 7 year bachelors/mds) programs, but I don't think I'd do it otherwise. Allegedly, it doesn't show breadth of philosophy (since you'll basically be taking classes with the same people), but if you really enjoy where you are, it's a good school, and changing would be a financial burden, I'd say go for it. I'm counting the days until I can attend another school, but if you like where you are...go for it!

If I were getting a graduate degree in my current major, I would stay. I am familiar with all of the professors. I can also get the inside track on any types of fellowships, scholarships or research opportunities here and abroad. Depending on your major and your career goals, it might be advantageous to stay because of the financial advantage. There may be TAships available that no one else may know about. Departments have money set aside for students who have a strong academic record and have financial need. If you are worried about not being multi-dimensional consider staying at your school for a masters and then moving on.

I think that this is a good topic.
If Wittenberg University, my esteemed alma mater, had graduate courses, it would seriously depend. Well, they have them, just not in the field I want.
Witt was expensive, so they only get one PAID go 'round. Now, if they had grad courses in my field, and I WORKED for the university and got FREE classes, then yes, I'd go back. Otherwise, no way, no how. Not for that amount of money.
Why you got me feeling all nostalgic, Ckret? I do wish that Witt had grad programs while I was still in undergrad. Then I would (if they had my field) have stayed there. I wouldn't have understood the financial commitment until after I'd graduated, since that's when the loans kick it. It's just that I know better now, lol.
I miss my alma mater immensely.

I wanted to go to my undergrad's graduate school, but my mother told me If I stayed there, I'd have to pay for it myself.
I wasn't for getting any loans, so I brought my you know what HOME. Boooooooooooooooooo! That's why I don't claim their butts and they lost this weekend to my REAL alma mater!

I went to three different schools....
One private, and two public. The private university is Howard U and the two public are York College and City College (which I'm presently attending) in CUNY. HU has a law school, I've received information from them. They seem to have a good program, but they don't teach one of the types of law that I'd like to learn (sports law). CUNY has a graduate center where they teach graduate courses and a law school. The law school doesn't teach sports law either, so I wouldn't consider applying, much less attend. Oh well, there are other schools that I'm considering applying to, and I'll post them tomorrow.
That's my ray of sunshine for now! Until next time people!!!

I am looking into graduate schools now. My school does offer both of the graduate degrees that I am pursuing, but I never considered staying here for grad school.
I want to go to a different type of school for graduate work because I want a new experience. I go to an HBCU in the South, so I am looking at PWI in the North or Midwest.

Things at....
City College are okay. This's my second semester and I'm just trying to take everything one day at a time and not become too involved in the political antics going on here. We just elected a new president last semester and I heard that CCNY has been without an official one for about a year or so. But anyways, the law schools that I'm considering applying to are (in ABC order):
1. American U. (Washington, DC)
2. Catholic U. of America (Washington, DC)
3. Columbia U. (New York, NY)
4. Cornell U. (Ithaca, NY)
5. Fordham U. (New York, NY)
6. George Washington U. (Washington, DC)
7. Georgetown U. (Washington, DC)
8. Georgia State U. (Atlanta, GA)
9. Hofstra U. (Hempstead, NY)
10. New York Law School (New York, NY)
11. NYU (New York, NY)
12. Penn State- The Dickinson School of Law (Carlisle, PA)
13. Seton Hall U. (Newark, NJ)
14. St. John's U. (Jamaica, NY)
15. Syracuse U. (Syracuse, NY)
16. Temple U.- James E. Beasley School of Law (Philadelphia, PA)
17. U. of Baltimore (Baltimore, MD)
18. U. of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA)
19. Wake Forest U. (Winston-Salem, NC)
Those are my rays of sunshine. I'll be back again to give you another dosage soon.

The University of Southern California does have a graduate journalism school. If I could get 100 percent financing from other sources, not out of my own pocket, I would consider getting a master's. But I'm also in my late 30s, so I've got to wonder whether it will be worth my time...
Logically, I should think about an MBA but my mathematical skills are almost nonexistent.
lil_sunshine: I have a close friend who got her law degree from Georgetown last year. She said it was a tough but good school.

Thanks for the heads-up about Georgetown, Steeltrap! I'll definitely keep that in mind while I finish undergrad (I have about a year or so to go) so that I can concentrate on being the best I can be (like the Army ). And I would strongly recommend that you try to brush up on your mathematical skills before you decide to pursue your Master's. In the end, it'll all be worth it!!! Another ray of sunshine has shown through!

I wanted to go therefor grad. Their repuation is excellent...and it's in my favorite part of DC!
Still, I have some reservations about going. The white elite aren't my favorite group of people to deal with.

That is true, Poplife...
B/c them white elitists can make you or break you, whether you're in their schools or work alongside them and you know what good work you do. Sad, but true.
