Daughter went thru Rush at a SEC school
Hi Everyone, I want to make sure that this is not a complaint, just trying to get an understanding of "how" it works. My daughter went all the way thru round 3 and then was not called back for prefs. I know she is my daughter and I am partial, but I just don't get it. One of the tops students at her school with a list of accomplishments and very outgoing and wanted to always be in a sorority. Had a few recs and didn't get a bid. What happens when someone so genuine, outgoing and the perfect student doesn't get a bid. She is very social, smart and mature. She was devastated and wondered what happened. I am posting this for those of you who didn't get bids also. We have had to regroup and this is a huge set back for a freshman at college with everything else going on the first week. That being said, she is strong and will succeed even if she isn't in a sorority. Please all of you think about the girls for whatever reason do not get in and if you are in a sorority remember that there are a lot of sisters that would love to be part of a sisterhood.

Let me guess...she goes to Auburn. If it's another school, pardon me, but we've had a rash of Auburn moms with the same story. Was your daughter released or did she drop out before prefs bc she didn't like the chapters she had left?

There is no way for us to guess what might have happened. There are a million things that could have happened. However, if she is at an SEC school, this statement is a HUGE clue. A "few recs" isn't going to cut it when rush is that competitive.
RECS TO AS MANY CHAPTERS AS HUMANELY POSSIBLE IS REQUIRED AT SUPER COMPETITIVE SEC SCHOOLS!
We preach this over & over & over here. Did she not realize this prior to going into recruitment?

Having "recs" to every chapter doesnt guarantee a young lady a bid either!

^^^True.
Even if you did have recs, at an SEC school, EVERYONE has them. They're just a standard thing.
Also, if she still had chapters left and withdrew, you kind of have to take the loss. She could have been in a chapter, but chose that it was more important to be in certain groups than it is to be Greek.
If she was TRULY released (didn't receive ANY invites), I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe there MAY be COR opportunities.
Even if she DID withdraw voluntarily, there may still be COR opportunities for her. But in that case, she has to really think about whether she is willing to check out chapters she didn't give a chance before. Ask: is it more important to be Greek or to be in certain chapters?

Amen to all the above...esp the "had a few recs." That just will not fly at an SEC school...

I spent five days last week helping my daughter's sorority at Auburn. I agree with the poster (don't remember if it was this thread or one of the other like threads) who said that this year's PMN pool was very strong. My daughter was very excited about their new pledge class. She also said that this year's PMNs had very high GPAs/ACT scores (I guess compared to previous years), so the competition was stiff.
As to recs, I actually did hear of a PMN who came to AU with No recs, was not a legacy, but who actually did receive a bid. So while recs are very, very important, it's apparently not always a deal killer not to have them.

Does anyone ever say "this year's pledge class was really weak. I'm not excited about the new pledge class at all. They're all realllly stupid."
I didn't think so.

To answer the OP, it's just one of those things that can happen. She's probably a perfectly lovely girl but there are so many other girls and if her conversation, although in no way bad or inappropriate, just wasn't memorable, she can get lost in the shuffle. It's very possible that every chapter liked her and would have been glad to have her as a sister - she just didn't make it quite high enough on the list. I wish I could say with confidence that she should look at COB opportunities, but I'm afraid those are going to be sparse at AU this year.
Suggest she get involved on campus, make friends, keep really good grades, and if this is something she really wants, she can always try again next year. It's even harder for sophomores, but it's not impossible.
If she dropped out with one or two chapters left, then I recant all the above and she can suck it. Sorry.
And Drole, they said that on the TV show Greek when the DIKs took the best girls. Does that count?

I know an NPC sorority that actually told their new pledge class how disappointed they were in them, that they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they took them. I swear. It was all over this area. And the sorority may have thought that that would spur on their pledges to be great but half of them resigned before the week was over.

Before everyone gets on the "she's too good for them" bandwagon, please read carefully.
