Sophomore Rush University of Miami, FL

Hey ya'll,

I'll be a sophomore this year at the University of Miami and I'm wondering if anyone could offer any insight at all into recruitment at UM. I understand that it is defferred, but I'm very curious as to what to wear, how formal or informal recruitment is, and if PNMs should obtain recs.

I am also worried that being a sophomore transfer student will negatively impact formal recruitment (because I've read that it does at some schools), so if anyone knows about that, please let me know!

Thank you!

Recruitment at UM is not overly competitive. Sure the groups may prefer freshman, but trust me it's not going to be a huge detriment, if a detriment at all. It's deferred so fall semester can really help or hurt you. This is Miami, and it's VERY EASY to get a reputation that you don't want and this will hurt you in recruitment for sure. On the flip side, getting to know sorority members through classes can help you immensely during rush. Let the friendships form naturally, of course. Spring recruitment is formal (not COB) so there are structured parties each night leading up to pref then bid day. I would obtain recs. It can't hurt and can only help you. Recruitment has been becoming increasingly popular at UM, so why not help yourself stand out a little? Many of the girls will be from Florida so they're used to the idea of recs (FSU/UF).

In terms of what to wear, people tend to dress pretty chic for recruitment.

I agree whole heartily with spalsh. if you're living in the upperclassmen dorms that will also help. there will be a ton of greek sophomores in each tower. Also try to meet some in classes, having friends in a chapter will mainly help, but realize that just because you have 5 friends in AAA won't guarantee a bid.

Splash said it best, it is VERY EASY to gain a reputation. Miami is smaller than one realizes and word gets around quick!

We do get some recs and if you can obtain them, why not. It only helps. Also with the clothes it's very trendy.

If you have any school questions you can PM me. I'm going to be a rho gamma (recruitment counselor) this year so I bet I can help!

Thank you so much for your help! I'm sure that I will have questions at some point (getting more and more anxious for the semester to start by the day!), so I really appreciate the offer.
