Former Grand Basileus James Avery passes.
on 3 May 2011 at 4am, the 28th Grand Basileus, Bro. James Avery, passed from this life and entered Omega Chapter. May we pray for his soul and his wife, Joan, one of Omega's former First Lady. Below is a statement of the 2nd District Representative.
My Brothers,
I regretfully inform you of the passing of one of Omega's Greatest Men - Brother James S. Avery, Sr. I spoke to Mrs. Avery (Joan) this morning and she shared with me that Brother Grand passed away at approximately 4:00a.m. This is a sad day for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. We have lost a legend, a man set apart, and I for one will truly miss him. We all loved him and I know that he loved us. On this past Thursday, prior to the opening of the 63rd Second District Conference, I had an opportunity to speak with him. Despite having difficulty breathing, he was upbeat and wanted me to share with you that he wished us a "successful conference." He then began to challenge the brothers to live Omega's Creed, to adhere to our four Cardinal Principles. Brother Grand treasured many things while here on earth, certainly he treasured his personal relationship with God, his lovely wife and family, but we all know that he held Omega in the highest regard. In speaking with Joan, she echoed those sentiments and stated that "Jim" loved us all. I shared with her that the brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity are praying collectively for her and the family. I ask each you to take a moment and reflect upon the life of Brother Avery, pray for his family.
The arrangements are still a work in progress. However, Joan shared with me that she is anticipating having the Omega Service on Thursday and his Funeral on Friday. Brothers, please prepare your calendars now, I urge each of you to be with us as we say goodbye to one of Omega's sturdiest trees. As soon as I receive additional information, I will share it with you.
Fraternally,
Brother Kenneth E. Rodgers
