Smile Another Sophomore Rush :)

Hi
Formal recruitment starts tonight! I am very excited! Last year I chickened out at this point because I got nervous, so I'm hoping to find some people on here to encourage me to not drop out. Whether or not I get a bid, I don't want to not be in a sorority because I was afraid to rush anymore. I think I also understand more about how the process works from reading rush stories so it's much less frightening.

This evening is orientation and I unfortunately won't be able to go (at least not to all of it) because of choir, but I am supposed to get a call this evening about everything that I missed. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow!

There are four sororities at my school but I don't want to call them by their names just in case (if some from my school reads this, it won't be hard to figure out who I am). I'm thinking of using the four Hogwarts houses unless someone has a better idea...

Good for you. Here's something that may calm your nerves: it's just as nerve-wracking for the active sorority members doing the recruiting! I remember how scared I was the first time I was on the recruiting side. I was so worried that none of the PNM's would like me, and that they'd think poorly of my house. So, just remember that it's a mutual selection process. It's not just you trying to fit into a house, it's the house fitting with you too.

I think the worst part is the anticipation. Once you get past your first party, you'll figure out what it's all about and relax a little. Good luck!!!

It's always scary jumping into the deep end, but it's worth it. Good luck!

Night 1

I just got back from my first night! It was so nerve racking at first, especially since I was a few minutes late to the first party because of choir. It was also unusually cold and I managed to spill hot chocolate on my only warm coat just hours before rush... So I was wearing a jean jacket and our rush t-shirt and freezing as I walked across campus.

Ok, I've decided to go slightly geekier thank Hogwarts houses I've been trying to think of things in fours that haven't been used in previous rush stories

Rose: I have some friends in this sorority and they're awesome. Everyone in this house seems very elegant and pretty and they have wonderful decorations at their rush/pre rush events, I just can't seem to click with them. I enjoyed talking with some of the girls, but they seemed to somehow end up talking to other PNMs.

Martha: I know this is a popular sorority on campus, and I have a lot of friends in it. A lot of my friends who are rushing want to be in this sorority. When we walked into this room, there were questions on papers on the floor in circles and we walked around them while the music played then stopped to discuss the question in front of us when the music stopped. It was really fun and I enjoyed talking with these girls and I was pretty comfortable.

Donna: I don't think Donna is as popular as Martha, but I really like them. I've gone to several events with them through last semester and I feel really comfortable with most of the girls. We did puzzles and answered questions drawn from cups and it was really fun and relaxed. I really love the Donna girls it's just so hard to figure out if I love them like friends or like sisters.

Amy: I feel like I don't know the girls in Amy as well as I know the others, partially because there is no one in Amy with my major. I don't really mind, it just feels more like uncharted territory than the others. On the other hand, they have my favourite philanthropy, and when I do talk to these girls, the conversations flow well and I feel comfortable after a few minutes.

Right now, I feel like I really don't belong in Rose, but I'm torn between the other three! Right now, if I were to somehow be offered bids to all three, I have no clue which I'd pick. Is this normal? It seems like some girls just "know" where they should be, but I can't decide and I'm terrified of making the wrong choice... suddenly three days of rush doesn't seem nearly enough.

Well, the adrenaline from the night is starting to wear off finally, so I think I'll get ready for bed so I have enough sleep for day two

Elphie,
If you read any one of the recruitment stories on here, you'll see that this feeling is really common. The first day is this overwhelming flood of sorority girl pep and cheer, but when it comes down to your final parties, when you're in a smaller group of potential new sisters and the preference ceremonies are more somber, you'll have a bit of a new perspective. Don't worry about not having a "tops" right now, in a way I think that's an advantage! If you work hard to maintain that open frame of mind, it will only benefit you in recruitment (and in life, for that matter).

And I'd argue that, unless one sorority is a group of masochistic baby eaters, there is no "wrong" choice. Each and every sorority has its highs and lows, every chapter. Every chapter has issues with which it struggles. And each and every chapter has sisters who love each other and would cut off their right arm to do right by each other.

But you might want to consult a Doctor to help you with your search for the right group.

Are you speaking ill of the masochistic baby eaters? I don't talk bad about your house!

To Elphie, if you keep an open mind, your mind will possibly change every day of recruitment and 14 times within each day. Day 1 is a huge blur. It sounds like you're having fun; just relax. Your answers will come in time.
