Question Rush Question

I have a question for you: Is there an age limit to join a sorority?

Volgirl,

Many NPC groups participate in something called Alumnae Initiation. It's usually for women who either did not go to college, or did not pledge while they were there. There is an extensive thread on this site dedicated to that topic. Check out the search feature and type in "Alumnae Honor Initiation".

Best of Luck!

Volgirl,

There is no technically no age limit for collegiate sorority chapters. However, one thing that has to be considered is whether or not a 25 year old woman is going to enjoy the same things that an 18 year old college freshman does. The reason I mention this is because, should you decide to join a sorority, your pledge class will be made up primarily of teenage college girls whose interests may vary greatly from yours.

Not to say that you shouldn't rush! Being in a sorority is a wonderful experience, and if you truly want to be a collegiate member of a Greek letter organization, then I say go for it. However, if you feel like your interests may differ from the younger sisters, I would suggest following AggieDZ's advice and look into becoming a sister as an alumna initiate where you will interact with women in your age group and above.

Good luck with whatever decision you make! Please keep us updated!

Carrie

I don't know of any age limits, but I agree with the previous post. During fall rush this year, there was a 25-year-old who went through the first round. Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure she did not get invited back anywhere and I would be willing to bet that if she didn't, it was because of the age difference between her and most of the sorority members. I think it sort of sucks that she might have been discriminated against because of her age, but then, I can see it from the sorority members' point of view...I mean, I'm just getting ready to turn 21 and already some of the 18-year-olds seem pretty young to me. My advice would be to try and get initiated as an alum.

volgirl2376,

I went through formal rush at 22 & pledged my first choice, AGD, and then went alum at 25. It was definitely an interesting experience!

Please feel free to pm me if you or anyone has any questions or would like to know more.

Greek love,

Jen (alumna)
