48 hours

Hello!

I thought you guys would wanna know..on Tuesday (April 3rd), 10 pm ET/9 Central, CBS's 48 hours is doing a story on how a college guy participated in a drinking game and passed away. And his fraternity brothers were involved...and they may go to jail...

Ughh, I saw the commercial for that, and it portrays Greeks in a horrible light, from what I have seen.

I think this is about the guy (can't remember where) who did a keg stand and then whacked his head and got a concussion. Thankfully (for lack of a better word) I think they are also covering things like the date rape drugs and fire safety, so the whole show won't be an anti-Greek slam...more like an anti-college slam.

If it sucks, we can write Dan Rather and tell him we are (in his words) "madder than a rained-on rooster."

really, situations like that always occur in the greek system, and it's a shame too, especially when you lose someone. Thats aweful Thanks Newbie for the channel post i am definetly going to watch. Hopefully greeks everywhere can learn from this.

Do you know what college it was at? There was a story like that not far from here earlier in the year and a friend of mine knew the guy who died. I'd be interested to see their take on it from an outsiders view.

You welcome, DGPhoney, and Harmony, sorry I don't know which college it was!! When I watch it, I'll tell you! Actually, I heard speculation that it was from Penn State? People are not sure, though. Hopefully I don't have too much hmwk on Tuesday so I can watch it

If it's about the keg stand incident, I think that happened at Indiana University. I won't say which chapter though, because I don't know for a fact that this is what it's out.

OK, as someone who went to a university where more than a few frat brothers died of alcohol related deaths, I can appreciate the fact that people make their own choices in what to do with their lives. Just keep in mind, Billy, that keg stands might seem fun, but when you do like 10 of them, it can kill you!

Thank you, Steve, for not mentioning the chapter at IU that has had recent trouble...because as it turns out, the 48 Hours story is not about a chapter at IU. (I went to IU, and am very sad about what happened to a certain chapter there recently, especially since that chapter is my finace's fraternity!!!) FYI, here is what 48 Hours has posted on their website:

"A Deadly Haze: Last winter, Steven Petz, a freshman at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., was pressured into drinking 27 shots of liquor as part of his initiation into an unauthorized fraternity. He passed out and was put to bed that night, but by the next morning, he was barely breathing. Pledge organizers waited an hour before getting Petz medical attention, even after it was clear that he was in serious condition. He later died from alcohol poisoning. In a landmark court case, six of his fraternity brothers were arrested and charged with crimes, including manslaughter."

So, it sounds like this is a sub-rosa fraternity, not part of the IFC... not that that makes the story any "better," but at least it doesn't implicate the IFC.

OK, now I am even more @#$%ed off about this whole deal than I was before!!!

This is a fraternity that the national (if they had one) and the school have basically branded to the world as outlaws by not recognizing them. All has been done that can be done to prevent people from joining - short of preventing the "brothers" to gather in any way, which would set a dangerous precedent. The fraternity in effect, if it was a restaurant, has a sign on it saying "Closed by the Department of Health."

But you KNOW they will barely bring that up, if at all. This fraternity which probably most Greeks would condemn, will be presented as being indicative of ALL Greeks. I hope I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt it.
