Incoming sophomore transfer, recruitment question..

So I have a bit of a situation and you all seem to have plenty of advice to give/knowledge of recruitment, so I would really appreciate any help! This past spring at my previous University I went through informal recruitment and accepted a bid from a sorority, however did not go through the initiation process as I knew that I would be transferring. I was upset because I really did get along with the girls and liked the chapted a lot, however financially it wasn't really feasible to be in a sorority when I was leaving the school for financial purposes most specifically. So I left during my new member period.

However, the school I will be attending in the Fall has the same sorority. I was wondering, since I left during the NM period last semester at my previous university, would this shatter all my chances of joining the same sorority on my new campus? I wouldn't have left my sorority had I known there was one on my new campus, as I would have loved to affiliate.

Thank you for any feedback in advance!

No one can say what your chances are of getting a bid to any chapter.

Every chapter of a sorority is different, so there is no guarantee that you'd get a bid to the chapter at your new school.

Oh no, for sure! I was just wondering, in the events that I possibly DID get a bid, would I not be allowed to join this chapter in my situation?

You're probably better off that you DID quit before initiation. There's the chance that either you would have disliked the chapter of the sorority at your new school, or that they would have disliked you, and then you would have been stuck and not able to join a new group. Also not all chapters immediately allow transfers to affiliate.

Just look at rush at your new school as a fresh start and try not to favor the chapter of your ex-sorority either one way or the other - don't compare them to the girls from your old school. Also, don't bring up that you were pledging and dropped - to ANY of the sororities. If one of them does know, and asks you about it, just say you quit because you knew you were transferring.

Are you asking about the rule concerning not being able to rush for a year after depledging?

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the one year rule no longer applies if you transfer schools.

Thanks for the insight! So this rule accounts for joining the same de-pledged sorority at a new school as well, not just rushing in general? I guess long story short thats what my concern bottles down to. Thanks!

You are free to accept a bid to any.

You keep asking about the sorority you depledged. You are able to accept a bid from them, but be advised that in formal recruitment, you may not even be invited back there (they're not obligated to do so).

Ok, it sounds like you'd really like to join the same sorority. There's nothing stopping you from joining the same sorority based on your past. However, should you go through recruitment again, it would be in your best interest to keep every chapter in mind. It is possible that the sorority you pledged will not be the best fit for you. It's also possible that they will be a great fit for you, but you'll have to find out.

COB is also a possibility but there are a lot of variables in involved there based on the org, the school, the chapter itself. We wouldn't be able to comment meaningfully on that either way.

This is correct. The one year rule only applies at the same school.

The minute you transferred from your old school to your new school, you became a free agent as far as Greek life is concerned.

You have no obligation to any group on your new campus, nor does any group there have any obligation to you (even if they had a chapter on your old campus). It is as if your receiving a bid and beginning pledging at your old campus never existed. You are, for all practical purposes, a first-time rushee.

Thanks for all the feedback! I most definitely am going in with an open mind for all the sororities, just wanted to evaluate whether I should immediately eliminate that sorority or get to know them during rush and see how things work out . I was just nervous since my name is on file at the HQ since I signed off on rules, etc. the first day. So if it happened that I fell in love with the chapter at my new school and by chance received a bid and then was later expelled it would be very upsetting!

Are you paid up as far as fees, etc? That's the only way there could be any sort of issue.

I paid the first months installment because it was due the second day after I was taken into the sorority, we had a very late informal rush so it had to happen that way. So I only paid about 200, I don't think I was ever refunded for it but my mom tried as I was only a member for a week or so.
