Question About Alumni of Local Fraternities/Sororities
Sorry if this question has been asked before but due to the size of this forum, I couldn't really find the answer I was looking for. When a local fraternity or sorority merges with a national organization, are the alumni of the local fraternity or sorority also granted alumni status of the national organization?

I felt like I read somewhere on the boards that some I/natl fraternities and sororities invite alums to be initiated within a certain time limit. The local alums could then decide whether or not they wished to initiate into the I/natl.

Generally, that is correct. They can chose to be initiated into the NPC group but there is normally a time frame for that, depending on their location and situation.

Some orgs do extend that opportunity to alumnae.
I know that there are people on this board who became members of NPCs due to their local affiliating with one (aephialum is one that comes to mind).

The orgs extend the opportunity, but the alums have to decide to take it. It is not automatic.

My local became part of AEPhi while I was an active. At the time, my local had one alumna, who joined us for our AEPhi new member ceremonies; I don't know if she was ever initiated.
It depends on the (inter)national organization. My understanding is that most do offer alum initiation to alums of absorbed locals (indeed, this is the only form of AI that AEPhi offers), but each alum has to decide for him/herself whether to accept the offer and initiate into the (inter)national org.

At my chapter's installation as a national from a local we had about 5 women become ZTAs. (I know that ZTA did send letters to all alumnae--over 1000 women) It was only valid for that year-1997.
Funny thing is as an advisor I have had 4 women who are alumnae from the local and they NOW want to join, but I have say sorry you had your chance.....

Is there a possibility that they didn't get the notification the first time around because of mail issues? Just saying is all.

Believe it or not, it takes some people that long to get back in touch. I know on facebook there are sisters I haven't talked to in 20+ years. That most likely is what spurred the women ZTAmillz is talking about.

Certainly, I know it can. But it's still very far down the questionable line in terms of motives, length of time, etc.
I'd want to know what prompted the interest now at the very least.

If an alum of a local has died, would her family have the option to affiliate her with a national if her former chapter has affiliated?

I would think not. She would have to go through the initiation process and as a deceased member of the local, that would not be possible. Anyway, as a member of the local, she may not have wanted to join the national group.

Is it just me or is the idea of affiliating someone posthumously ..well.. a bit creepy?
