Facebook blues

One of my dear friends has a daughter who is mentally challenged - not badly, but she will never live on her own. The daughter has found Facebook, and every time I'm on anymore, she IM's me. This wouldn't be a problem if the questions were more than "what are you doing" or "how are you". I only joined Facebook because two different groups make the announcements etc from there. I really don't want to block her from contacting me, and I really don't want to say anything to her mother. I'm fairly certain that I'm stuck, but maybe somebody else has had this problem?

BTW, ADPi sisters - there are some really interesting slide shows on the ADPi page!

I hate facebook.

I would block her. Privacy settings exist for a reason. Defriending exists for a reason.

Also, her mental challenges must be relatively bad if she will never live on her own. Perhaps she shouldn't be on facebook.

An alternative might be to log out of the chat part? I'm never "online" for chat.

Yep, I do this too. It does prevent you from chatting with anyone else... You can't just appear offline but talk anyway like some other products.

If you have other people you want to talk to, Honey, your best bet might be to restrict her access to you. Sounds harsh, but it may make your Facebook world much better! I defriended an uncle when he was making too make offensive comments. My mom was aghast- "did you friend him back??" but it literally kept me up at night until I defriended him. Sometimes a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. And if you don't chat with anyone else, just go offline in the chat section and all will be well again.

I have mixed feelings. She may be reaching out because she is lonely. On the other hand, I also know what it feels like when someone "over reaches" and becomes annoying!

Yes! Normally, I treat her just as I'd treat anyone else. She is really quite beautiful, until she's deep in thought - then you can tell. It's a heartbreak, and I wouldn't hurt her or her mother for the world!

Go to Account - Edit Friends.
Click "Friends" on the left hand side under Lists.
Clikc "Create New List"
A window will pop up - name the list something.
Scroll through to find the person you want to block in chat. Select them, then save the list.

On the left hand side there is now a list with the name (say you named it "Blocked")

Now, go to chat on the lower right and open it. Click Friend Lists. Select the list you just created. It will show up in the chat window. Slide the slider over so it's no longer green.

That person can no longer see you're online to chat with you, but everyone else can.

They still have access to everything a friend would in your profile though (although you can use this list to restrict them from things like reading your wall, seeing your photos etc).
Bless you! I really am not a chat/aim/im type person, unless I'm in a chat room. Those pop up chats are just annoying as garbage full of fish!

Me neither, that's why I just log out. If I really want to talk to someone, I'll msg their inbox or write on their wall

I have no problem blocking people that I don't want contacting me (for a number of reasons). You should try it.

I've put several people on ignore, for several different reasons. These are different circumstances.

Oooh, thanks Jen. I didn't know you could do that. Although I think the person who was doing it to me has gotten the message and doesn't keep popping up for chats anymore.

God Bless You, Jen! THat helps me IMMENSELY.

I'd say just be offline for chat since you're only there to make announcements anyway, but this is a great alternative if you have people with whom you do wish to speak.
