Man ordered to pay Fred Phelps court costs

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/mar...,5037470.story

Lawyers for the father of a Marine who died in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters say a court has ordered him to pay the protesters' appeal costs.

On Friday, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered that Albert Snyder of York, Pa., pay costs associated with Fred Phelps' appeal. Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., which held a protest at the funeral of Snyder's son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, in Westminster in 2006.

Sometimes the law gives the right result but it's still morally outrageous. This is one of those cases.

These Westboro types must be protected. They are a great set of facts in that they some of the most vile and contemptuous folks around. If there ever was a case for viewpoint-based censorship, they're it. That said, I think this gives the Court a great chance for a really watershed ruling on free speech issues.
