Sophomore Rushing at Texas

I'm a current freshman at UT Austin. I didn't rush my freshman year because I'm out-of-state and wanted to get to know the campus and the Greek Life a little better before I rushed. I'm planning to rush next fall (2010) and I know that I will be at a disadvantage because of my residence and my classification. However, the word on the street is that the Panhellenic Council voted to allow each chapter a sophomore quota of 4. I also have some good friends in sororities who would be willing to help me out.

My question is this: What are my chances, with good recs, perfect grades and a decent resume, of getting into one of the non-Big 6 sororities? I know you're supposed to go into rush with an open mind, but I'm aware that I have almost no chance of getting a bid in any of the top sororities, and I feel that I would fit in better with the smaller ones anyway. Should I even bother rushing?

Thank you all so much!

I've never heard of the phrase "non-Big 6 sororities" and it rubs me the wrong way. What does this refer to, the other 8 chapters at UT that are not considered top tier? Nobody is able to tell you whether you will get a bid from any of the 14 NPC sororities at the University of Texas. You shouldn't listen to tiers and which sororities are considered top tier, middle tier, or bottom tier and go into recruitment with an open mind.

Absolutely rush this fall, but go into it with an open mind as people have stated.

Knowing girls in the houses will help you immensely, and if it is so that there is going to be a separate sophomore/upperclass quota, then all the better.

Good luck.

We can't really tell you what your chances are. We are not in those chapters at UT and do not know what they are looking for.

I do know that grades and recs are a must.

Just be aware that you'll be in recruitment with mostly freshmen, with many of them having perfect grades and resumes, and that an upperclassman quota does not = guarantee of a bid (not saying that's what you think, but I've heard PNMs say that).

This UT thread has some good info and links in it:

I'm sorry, APhi4ever... I didn't mean to offend you. I guess I was using the phrases I'm accustomed to hearing from my friends. I wasn't trying to imply that I believe the tier system that some other people use... Honestly I don't care how other people "rank" a chapter, I just want to find the one that fits me, and I thought I had an idea of which ones those might be. But you're right, I should be more open-minded about them before going in. I really appreciate all of your responses!

No one can tell you what your chances are. All we can say is be prepared, put your best foot forward and hope for the best.

Just go and have fun! I too have heard that there will be a sophomore quota this next year.(At least that's the word on the street) I didn't know it had been set at 4. That is great news since pledge classes are not that large. Do they still have the 2 free junior rule at UT? If so, that allows spots for 6 upper class pnms and that would be great for everyone. I have heard, again a rumor, that some groups may not take take advantage of the upper class quota but that's up to them but it is nice for those who choose to to be able to be able to take advantage of those additions.

Please keep in mind that just because a chapter can take free upper classmen doesn't mean they will.

So no hope for me then :(

I am currently a sophmore and wanted to rush as an incoming junior. I guess thats not going to happen for me? I am a little picky about which sorority i join. Does anyone know the recruiting process for UT Tri-Delts?

Tri Delta's membership selection process is private.

I'm going to be honest, if you are picky, you'd better become unpicky very soon because you will not have as many options as your typical freshman PNM is going to have.

Being open-minded is a good thing. It's not a good idea to go through recruitment only wanting certain sororities because those may not even be interested in you.

If you're going to "be picky" and exclude chapters or only focus on certain ones, prepare to go without a bid (especially as a junior).

Good luck.

Its just preference, Ive been trying to do my research and look into sororities that I think I would be compatible with, I dont want to just jump on to whoever gives me bids is all. If I even get bids.
