It Came from the Classic Horror Movie Thread
Before CGI and Animatronics...there was fake blood and prosthetics. before there was PG 13, there was just R and NC 17.
Before there was Jigsaw, there was Freddy and Jason
What are some of your favorite ol' school horror movies?
Ol' school meaning 15 to 20 years and older.
Also, if there have been any remakes, how have they stood up to the original?
My short list
Hellraiser 1 and 2
Nightmare on Elm Street of course
Fright Night
Evil Dead
American Werewolf in London
Exorcist
Any flicks of Christopher Lee as Dracula...hehehe

Carrie.
It is the only scary-type movie I can watch.
There was a remake in 2000ish I believe, but it was really stupid.

Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street did it for me.
Was Tales from the Crypt a movie? I remember it being a TV show, and it scared the crap out of me. Then again, so did Unsolved Mysteries. Go figure.

Sorry hon, but before PG-13, NC17 was X.
Psycho, The Exorcist, Friday the 13th and Halloween. The Shining. And that puppet movie with Chuckie.. so creepy. Child's Play? Is that the name of it?

no, her extensive knowledge of movie trivia. and i'm not old either!
psycho, the shining, hush, hush sweet charlotte, the brain(i think that is the name of it-this woman's head is severed in an auto accident, and her mad scientist boyfriend keeps her head alive until they can find a suitable body donor). i was probably about 5 or 6 when i saw this advert. at the movie theater and i am still freaked out about it! any psychological horror movie will effect me the same way, much more so than the blood and gore movies of today.

The Shining is definitely a favorite. Silence of the Lambs still seems recent to me, but it's almost 20 years old so I'm going to consider it a classic. [Slight hijack: One of the more frustrating things about teaching college students is that I'm constantly surrounded by non-aging people! They're here from 18-21ish, then leave before they get old. So, I feel like time is standing still... until I realize that I saw Silence of the Lambs in the movie theatre, and many of my students weren't even born yet. Then I feel incredibly old.]

Right!! And although not 'old' yet, one of my favorite 'new classics' LOL is Identity! Did not see that twist coming!
Did anyone get messed up after watching the 1970s version of Salem's Lot?

Carrie-read the book first (huge Stephen King fan--but thinks Koonz is tooooo sick)
The Exorcist--whoo wee! Linda Blairs head spinning around and throwing up pea green soup! Eck! Then the newer version of the Exorcist--with the creepier stuff added!
The Omen--read the book first! DAYMN SAM! Both were creepy!
Nightmare on Elm Street--Freddy Kruger--that's all that needs to be said.
Friday the 13th--1-3--truly creepy! Especially the first with crazy ass mom! Daymn, made it kinda creepy to go to camp that summer.
The Shining--REDRUM, REDRUM!
An American Werewolf in London--I still CANNOT watch that movie! My Mom took me to see it when I was a kid and it FREAKED me out! All I remember was seeing the first 5 minutes of that movie, screaming, and I do mean SCREAMING my head off in my Mom's sweater and her having to take us out of the theater into another movie--was terrified of that movie! Will not, can not, and have not watched it till this day and I'm 35 years old!
Pirhana (sp)--Oh me, oh my! I watched that movie with my brother-and damn, that boy scared the suffing outta me! He told me that our mother had ordered some and they were coming the next day! All I know is that when I see him again, I think I'm gonna find some pirhana's to put in his whitey tightys!
