Prepledging please read my story
To all frats and sororities please read.
I think I'm being pre-pledged and don't even know it. How do I handle this situation where I can be cordial(not too attached) without being taken advantage of?

Reason: too much information.

I'm a transfer student at Southern Illinois University who is intrested in joining a particular fraternity. I attended an RSO fair where every (active) organization was there. I met the members for the first time and introduced myself. They ask about whether I know anything about the fraternity, and I (in less than 45 seconds) said everything that I knew about the fraternity without screwing up. They was impressed, and asked for my information. Now days go by, I see em' around campus. I say whats up. try to keep my distance. NEVER SAID That I wanted to Join. on a friday one of the men somehow instructed me to "Donate" some alcohol and bring it to his house. I don't know why but I did just for the hell of it. when we both met up, He asked me some questions that I don't think has anything to do with my interests. He asked me was I a virgin, because i "sound" like I don't get any @$$. I could not believe he asked me that question. Then he instructed me to study a poem called "Invictus," and memorize it the next day. I have not seen this guy in 2 days already, and I'm not really going to look for him either.
I feel like i'm already being pre-pledged and not even know about it. It's not like I ever said that I want to be in this fraternity. all I did was recite what i kno. None of the other guys know that this is happening, but i'm confused. How should I handle this situation? should I be happy that i'm being prepledge, or should I pull back from befriending with this frat member before he gets the wrong Idea of me. I don't want to screw up my chances to be apart of an organization of brotherhood thats bigger than myself, nor do I want to be labled as someones BI**H, like he can take advantage of me and the decision of me pledging lies in his hands. do I just do what they say or should I fall back. because no matter what happenes, My education always come first. but after that should I focus on how i would prove that I would make a good brother or just enjoy my junior year as a student at SIU? please give me some advice.

So...I'm guessing this is NPHC...judging by syntax and otherwise?

It's a poem, written by Mr. William Ernest Henly. The page is from a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Well, I could tell you it was NPHC without knowing that. But I knew that as well.

yes an NPHC! how should I respond to this situation? is it a good thing or a bad thing? Informationals are coming soon and I want to know if this is the right thing to do. I know I know better, but I'd never thought I would be prepledged.

ok.. they took your knowing a lot of info about them and presenting it in a presentable manner as showing interest.
IF you are not interested in joining this frat, say so. But your actions still have them thinking that you are interested.
THE only thing that matters is - Are you interested or not?
If your answer is NO.. then you need to speak to the members accordingly (I feel this is your answer b/c you were still trying to feel out the campus).
But if your answer is YES, you need to handle the situation accordingly....

i do want to. i just don't want pre pledging a fraternity to be the result of whether I make a good addition to their organization. only one member is doing this anyway. maybe i'll just have a talk to him and let him know what my deal is with whats going on, whats my purpose, know him and the members individually 1st, and let him know that this is Not whats about to go down and to respect me as well.

So you attend SIU? Interesting.
I don't think you are in a position to tell a member of that organization what will not go down, but you are in a position to express your feelings and to walk away from something you don't agree with.

I feel bad that he tried to correct his mishap and it is still QFP.
I think westd44 was dumb for donating alcohol because he's probably under 21 and this probably wasn't an event where EVERYONE had to bring something.
This frat member is probably playing off of westd44's demeanor and willingness to go along with it. He may be amusing himself because he's found someone naive and foolish enough to do these things.
