Thumbs down Poetry Set Overload

Why are they so popular? It seems like every organization in Chicago is having them nowadays. Personally I think its overload, especially when they are so close together.

Chicago is all about poetry

Personally being a Chi-Native I believe that poetry and the arts are very characteristic of my city. Its a beautiful thing. Recently with the popularity of movies like Love Jones and and artists like Jill Scott doing spoken word, everyone wants to be on the "cultural" kick. For some its just a fad..its seems trendy to go to coffee shops and act like your hear what the poet is really saying. And for those of us like myself it is a way of life that you cherish and strongly believe in. Besides the whole club scence is dead and people like to go out but they like to relax at the same time. But thats just my two cents on the situation.

I wish my city was like that. Poetry places are so few and far between. (I live in south florida)

I understand where you are coming from...I agree with you. I am afraid to see what will happen when it isn't a fad anymore...will we continue to have poetry spots in my area??/

i have to respectfully disagree...and say that i don't believe it to be a fad at all...but a genuine search for something higher...deeper...and intellectually stimulating...perhaps some people have since they can remember been the deep thinkers...the "natural" poets and continual seekers of knowledge...but just because you are new...something in a poem or at a shop caught your attention late in life...doesn't mean you are following a fad...it means...that perhaps...a deep...genuine interest was sparked in you...and that you are really feeling the words of the poet...

Funny this topic should appear. I am scheduled to speak at our local Fort Myers VIBE session on Friday, October 26. I agree with both sides of this discussion. In some cases it is a fad and once it ends the club owners will focus on the new cultural flavor of the month. But the spoken word scene has been around for a long time. May it live on!

I like poetry. I didn't like it that much when I was younger unless it rhymed and sounded cute and innocent, but I write poetry now and it helps me get some of the thoughts that I have off my chest. I don't know, that's just me though.
