Republican's Gift Held Racial Parody of Obama
Quote:
Chip Saltsman, a candidate for chairman of the Republican National Committee, sent committee members this month a holiday music CD that included "Barack the Magic Negro," a parody song first aired in 2007 by talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

It's kind of funny if you know what a magical negro actually is... but this song has been around for months.
Where it loses me is that it was written for Rush Limbaugh's audience, so the punchline (i.e., what was intended to be funny) probably had more to do with Obama's race than any sort of common movie archetype.

Of course. I thought that from the beginning. I think most people did..even if they knew about the "magical negro." So why does that lose you?

My bad... I guess you can't read my mind.
I was talking about the humor value of the song. On one level, it could be funny because it's making fun of an L.A. Times Op-Ed piece, has to do with a literary/film archetype, etc. While that's all good and true, most of the intended audience probably thought the song was funny for less valid reasons (e.g., racism).

Most definitely.
That was a good Op-Ed piece by the way.
I just find the whole thing with the CD hilarious.
