Alpha Phi Establishes Fund to Aid Terror Attack Victims

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - CONTACT: Maureen Lyons (847) 316-8942

(Evanston Ill., September 14, 2001) -- In response to Tuesday’s tragic acts of terrorism on the United States, Alpha Phi International Fraternity today through its Foundation established the Alpha Phi September 11 Disaster Relief Fund to directly aid victims of the tragic terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C.

“Alpha Phi is deeply saddened by the horrific assault on our fellow American citizens and our 120,000 concerned members want to reach out and to help. We ask the nearly nine million members of other U.S. and Canadian Greek-affiliated organizations and their respective local communities to band together and donate to the fund,” said Jean Tindall, Alpha Phi International President.

“For almost 50 years the Alpha Phi Foundation has provided financial relief for our collegiate and alumnae members in times of disaster and distress through earmarked funds and ongoing programs,” said Nancy Craig, Executive Director, Alpha Phi Foundation. “It is a natural extension of Alpha Phi Foundation’s charitable mission to reach out to aid fellow Americans during this difficult healing period.”

Alpha Phi ensures that all monies collected will specifically aid the recovery of victims of the World Trade Center and U.S. Pentagon catastrophes. In addition, the Foundation will maximize all donations by gaining matching dollars from partnering organizations. All contributions are tax-deductible.

“September 11 will forever be a day that we remember this tragedy. By establishing the Alpha Phi September 11 Disaster Relief Fund, Alpha Phi hopes to also remember it as a day we were inspired to extend generosity, compassion and financial support to victims,” said Pam Wilcox, Executive Director, Alpha Phi International Fraternity.

More than 15,000 collegiate and alumnae Alpha Phi members currently reside in the New York and Washington D.C. areas.

The Fraternity has more than 140 collegiate chapters and more than 175 alumnae chapters throughout the United States and Canada. A nonprofit organization, The Alpha Phi Foundation is the philanthropic and educational arm of Alpha Phi Fraternity. Through contributions from chapters, individual members and friends, the Alpha Phi Foundation supports cardiac care programs and other charitable projects, and a variety of scholarships, financial aid and leadership training programs for women.
