Sorority Rush?
Hi, I am going to attend college starting in the fall of 2010 and I really want to rush a sorority, but I had a question about the recommendations? Are they required, and if they are not, is it going to hurt my chances if I don't have them? Thank you!!

I always say, if you're in doubt, get them because it may help your chances. Depending what school you go to and how competitive it is, you may need recs.

Depends on your school.
At some schools, you aren't going to get past the first day without them.
At others, girls don't typically have them.

If you are going to a SEC school you definitely need them.
Hey, I just had another one of my brilliant ideas. Maybe we should make a sticky called "Schools where you absolutely positively need recs (no matter what the website says)."

I very much like that idea. Because I remember before I went through informal I was freaking out a little because I didn't even know what a rec was, and the website said I didn't have to have them (but don't they all?) Luckily I was able to ask a good friend who was in leadership in her sorority and she said that we don't really do them at Penn State. I didn't realize until later that recs are part of the the vast gulf that separates Northern school recruitment and Southern, but then again, neither do many PNMs. Which is why I second this idea.

Great idea, 33girl! This would save a lot of the repeat questions each year!
OP - do a search, and read up on this site before you go any further. There is a wealth of info on here - maybe even some for your specific school.

As a recruitment advisor I would say get them regardless if you can. A recommendation will not hurt you.
Some sororities require that a PNM have one before extending a bid. Yes, a chapter can find one for you if the chapter wants you, but it is much easier on the chapters if you come in to recruitment already having one.

There is an entire section on their Greek Life site concerning recs and where to send them.
I would say that YES it is competitive and YES you need recs.

I'd love the idea of the sticky for where u absolutely need recs. I didn't even know they what they were when I went through. Thank God I go to a southern school that isn't competitive and where the norm is not to have them otherwise it would of been bad lol

What they said! You must have recommendations and OU has a very competitive recruitment and large chapters and pledge classes. You can PM me if you have questions.
