Race for the Cure - Survivor Tent ideas

Hello all. I am back with yet another question. I recently took the position of ZTA Race Representative for the Tidewater Race for the Cure. I am trying to make the Survivor Tent something that the Survivors will use more often. If there is anything unique, cute or goes over very well with the survivors at your races, please can you share the ideas with me? I would really appreciate it!

As a side note, our race is going to be held on Ovtober 15, 2011. The survivors and co-chairs are very excited. They are planning some way to acknowledge our Founder's Day at the race. How awesome is that?

ZL!
Meredith

A few years ago, one of the Zetas who was a teacher got her class to draw cards for the survivors. We placed them as center pieces. Each of the survivors took one home. Several of them cried. Every year we have pink balloons and pink flowers everywhere. Also, we have collegiate Zetas at each entrance into the tent. They walk the survivors to their seats and serve them breakfast (pink pancakes, Yoplait yogurt and fruit). Hope this helps!

I was at the Columbus Race for the Cure this past spring, and the Survivors tent had something along the lines as what was mentioned up top. ZTA also sponsored the tshirts the Survivors were wearing, and there was an MC at the finish line calling out to the Survivors crossing the finish line and asking them how long, and she'd announce it over the loudspeaker. I have a picture of the tshirt, hang on....

Lovely t-shirt, made my eyes mist.

And ZTABullwinkle, thank you for taking this opportunity on. Although I am not a survivor, I do have friends who are.

I am a former Race Chair and would be happy to share ideas that we used. PM me your email address (if you are comfortable) and I will send you a Word document of what I can remember.

Kuddos to you for taking this on. Great event, great organization, great cause.

What a great idea! I know we have a few teachers in our chapter, so I may be able to use that idea with the cards. We tend to stay away from balloons since our Race is right on the Oceanfront. Wind plus balloons don't mix very well. We haven't done much in the way of food in the past years. This year is going to be different with the whole wedding. I am waiting to see what all of that is going to include and be on my shoulders.

As for Yoplait, they changed their practice this year. They are only bringing actual yogurt to 10 markets, we are not one of them. The other markets are going to get coupons. I am disappointed because I planned on collecting some serious lids for our alumnae chapter.

ZTA is a national sponsor for Race for the Cure. We supply not only the Survivor shirts, but survivor ball caps and "In Memory of/In Celebration of" signs. We are usually the ones who are responsible for staffing the Survivor Tent. I LOVE that idea of having the MC announce the years in remission as they cross the finish line. I asked them if they have looked into giving medals to the survivors who race. So, maybe that will get implemented.

Blondie93 - I will send that PM right now. I am looking for ideas and will take about anything I can get. I not only want the Zetas to be more active, but I want the Survivors to utilize the tent more than for an hour before Race.

I have always wanted to be more active in Race for the Cure. SO I stepped up this year. There have been quite a few roadblocks this year. Homecoming the same Saturday as Race for the Cure. Race Day is our Founder's Day. Etc. Etc. Etc. I really want this to be a more positive experience for all, so that is why I am looking for ideas. I love meeting the Survivors. They are so uplifting!

I almost forgot. They are doing a great fundraiser this year. They had 130 huge pink trash cans donated. For $25, you can "buy" a trash can to use for fundraising. The prize for best decoration is an Ipod. The prize for most fundraising is an Ipad 2. I am racking my brain for ideas. I really want an Ipad and will be able to support Komen at the same time. So I will take some ideas for that also.

I already had someone tell me to use the trash can for a keg party. Charge $5/a cup by someone from another sorority. She said it would surely be a winner! I don't think that is the right way to go about it.

We have come up with a few more ideas, not only as fundraising, but as gifts for survivors. I had a link for bulk key chains. We discussed giving away the key chains that look like a horseshoe with "charm" that acknowledges RFTC 2011. Unfortunately, I have having lots of trouble finding companies that do these types of key chains. Please if you know of any online sites, can you pass them along to me? (I am thinking they are the same sites we would have used to purchased our glasses and knick-knacks from Formal.
