SD cards vs. SDHD cards

I got an amazing new camera for Christmas....Canon PowerShot, 10 mp! I haven't had a new camera in years, so I was very excited. I popped in the 8GB flash disk my dad gave me(instead of the 35mb card that came with it). The camera stores the data and everything, but when I go to load the pictures into the computer, it won't read it? Apparently my computer is SD but not SDHD compatible? Does anyone know of a patch to fix this? Or another way to load my pictures onto my computer?

ETA: Theta can u clarify...is it an SDHD or SDHC card

Sorry, it is an SDHC card. I figured out how to get the pictures to the computer via the cable that came with the camera. I ordered a card converted that is in a USB form. That should work!
