And to answer your question, it takes a few years to get DM started up well.
The way my campus does it is the following: you sign up and pay a $20 fee (registration started recently and ours is going to be held in the end of January 2009), then you either raise or pay out of pocket about $120 more in order to be a dancer (the money is due about a week or more before DM).
Committee members and Morale Captains (the people who dance each hour on stage and are in charge of the different groups) pay about $500 I think- but I'm not completely sure. Some chapters hold chapter-wide fundraisers to offset the costs of their dancers. And of course there's fundraising held throughout the year before.
My chapter has won DM for 2 years in a row now, and my school in total raised about $114,000+ this past March.
