Instead of saying "black issues" I say "service the black community." "Black issues" is a very complicated and misused phrase.
Like I said, many JL members are Greek alumnae and the Leagues DO service minority communities WHICH INCLUDE THE BLACK COMMUNITIES.

You like to pick on me, don't you, DSTCHAOS? You must have issues with non-white women who are members of white organizations.

There are Greek alumnae who attend church, as well. Should we now discuss the role of the church and religion in America?

ETA: I will entertain your JL insertion and say that this goes back to the issue of "implicit" versus "explicit." The JL is EXPLICIT in its diversity of membership and constituency as opposed to an EXPLICIT "acceptance" of diversity of membership but an IMPLICIT (which more often translates to "imaginary") diversity of constituency. In general, it still makes the JL a bad comparison for reasons beyond not being a GLO.

What does your being a non-white member of a certain type of GLO have to do with what you are posting? I don't care who or what you are. So, get the chip off of your shoulder and back away from the vanity mirror for a moment.

They don't want to nor do they want to realize how this discussion fits well into this thread topic.

Ugh. I'm sorry, but this just irked me and I have to step down from my usual mature self and say what I want to say here.

DSTCHAOS is not "picking on you" I read all of her posts and she doesn't "PICK" on anyone. Just because she chooses to respond in detail to all posts made to her for, obviously, the purpose of bringing to fruition the points she initiates that people more often than not get confused and twisted does not mean she is "PICKING" on people. Now I am sure Chaos is quite capable of taking care of herself, but i had to say that. People need to actually READ what she says because it ALWAYS makes perfect sense and is very logical. The few of us who actually TRY to take the time and discuss these issues with others, i.e. NPC/IFC and whatever other councils are represented in these forums, as well as non-minority people in general who tend to have NO idea where we are coming from with regards to racial issues, are actually dispersing what could be valuable information that YOU ALL could take and improve your obvious lack of understanding of issues that ARE in fact important.

Taualumna, you come on here saying some silly stuff a lot of times, backtracking needlessly over topics and discussions that others had taken a long time to wade through. I have mentioned this to you before. Some of the things you say just boggle my mind. Sorry to be so blunt, but this really irked me. You being an asian woman in a white organization is fine if that is what you chose to do. But I am SICK of reading your condescending posts toward other minorities, attacking things YOU choose not to understand. If you don't subscribe to the opinions of black people with regard to our feelings about our country and our history, FINE. I could care less! You are NOT black, you have NO idea what it feels like and you have NO CLUE about our perspective and why we have the heritage, culture, views, perspectives, goals, ambitions, likes and dislikes that we do. You can have your little viewpoints from your chosen perspective on things from your little town in Canada if you wish, but don't play the dingy role and accuse someone of attacking you just because they opt to respond to the stuff you post and point out the inadequacies of what you say.

Now come on and make your little quirky response to this. I'll check back for it later.

It's really NOT your business!!

What is the REAL issue that some people have with Blacks, Asians, Latinos/Latinas or other minorities in "white" sororities and fraternities??! I am Jewish/Black in a "white" sorority. It was MY decision to rush with MY friends who I wanted as MY sisters. My choice to be in my sorority is MY business, no one else's. I , too, get sick of people assuming I'm in a Black sorority when they see me dressed in a certain color or if I say I'm Greek. I don't point fingers and ask why didn't a DST become an AKA instead, or a Zeta, why aren't you a Sigma Gamma Rho, so get out of my business and let me have fun with my lifelong sisters as I let you have fun with yours. And yes, white sororities DO have active alum chapters, and some have AMUMNI INITIATIONS too.

Toronto a "little town"????????

Our population is over 2 million (close to 5 million if you include the surrounding suburbs)

Half the population are immigrants and just about as many are visible minorities.

However, many minorities are also not living in poverty. Many issues that are considered "ethnic"/"race" issues are in fact "class" issues. These include access to health care (okay, so Canadian healthcare is socialized, but this doesn't include dental and meds among other things), education, having a safe place to live, etc...

I couldn't even begin to tell you what the JL does here. I never hear about it.

But in any case that is comparing apples to oranges.

You are right it is your business. And I don't see anyone saying the opposite. We are all responding to a thread topic with our various positions. So calm down and go have fun with your lifelong sisters. No one here is stopping you.

Oh and thanks for reiterating info we were given earlier in the thread. Like I said before, I learned something new regarding ALUMNI Initiations in GLOs.

O didn't read that. If that's what she said then I didn't see it. All I was agreeing with is that there are Asian stores in Toronto and they are the best place to get the best selection of Asian foods.

I think a few people on this board have misunderstood my grocery store post. It is FACT that Asian stores were really smelly/dirty at one point. The post was not meant to be racist/discriminating against a particular group of cultures. The reason why these stores smell is because of the way raw meats were handled and the fact that many of the stores were family owned and therefore didn't have the large staff to keep the store spick and span. Now, many of the stores are chains, and therefore have the money to hire more staff. That's why they're clean.

back to our regularly scheduled program...

JL isn't a greek org. and this is greekchat. hmmmm....

and stop taking stuff personal. i'm sure she doesn't have anything against you. stop being so sensitive.

but you acknowledge that you're in white organizations....hmmm...do i sense a case of self-hatred?
