I'm just too embarrassed when we...(not for the sensitive)

What bothers me are folks who joke around 'ethnically' around white people.

Let me try to give an example.

One of my sistafriends has this habit of going out of her way to 'be black' and joke around about 'black' things around our common white friends. Lots of "ooooh, weee girl," "Lawd have mercy," etc. And she DOESN'T talk this way to me when we're alone. She speaks regular english (like someone with an advanced degree should)! It's like it's for THEIR benefit.

I don't find it funny and find it particularly offensive when said common white friends expect ME to joke around, react and converse the same way just because I'm a 'sista' too.

Girlfriend's rationale behind acting like this is 'so they don't forget that they're dealing with black people.'



MOST annoying....

She gets the "as a matter of fact, black people are NOT a monolith set on this earth to entertain white folks" prize.

To comment on what Alouette said, I had a similar, but slightly different experience just recently. Instead however, this person decided to start the bafoonery (sp) with me instead of a white person.

So, I'm calling up an out-of-state university to confirm that they recieved all parts of my grad application. It was due in 2 days. The woman (who started the phone call very prefessionally) must have picked up that she speaking to a fellow black woman because not soon after she tuns completely "Nae, Nae" on me.

She starts talking extra loudly on the phone. . . using her ebonics and yelling to other people in he backgroud ( "Tasha where da mail man at. . . he come in yet ?") What topped it all off for me was when she said "Gyrl hold on fa a minute . . .I tink das da mail man right now and he might could have yo lettas and stuff" I just looked at the phone and thought what in the he** kind of office are you running. As a potential student that situation right there could have easily change my mind. This lack of professionalism could be the reason why a lot of black people are reluctant to do business with "our folks"

It's just too much to comment on, so I will not pull quotes from the post. I am also embarassed by people who come in late to the movies talking, with cell phones on talking and/or ringing, and those that bring babies in the movies. Buckhead Backlot is probably the only theatre I can deal with. Can't stand people that don't tip, tip too little, try to comment on your generous tip, or try to take the tip from the table. Also embarrassed by those who find something to complain about everywhere they go. People that try to pronounce things they know they can't say and are loud and proud with it. Racist comments made in front of people of that race, or negative comments made about your race in front of people that make the stereotypes. The list goes on and on. Also embarrasing movies, TV shows, commercials, music, etc that degrades a race. There is a difference between comedy and degradation. There is a difference between getting your monies worth and complaining. There is a difference between educating and constructive criticism versus calling someone dumb and not giving a reason why. What is the world coming to?

Once I was in a dining facility on a military post. A young girl who I'd met a few days earlier saw me and said hi. She asked me if I was going to get in the meal line. I said yeah. She goes on to say that there are too many white devils up in heya and that she hates white people blah blah blah. She was saying some stuff that if the shoe was on the other foot, it would have been a straight up fight. I'm talking like at least a hundred people heard her and turned around and looked at me. I was so dumbfounded as to why she would say that. I was like Seeyalata girl, Im getting in line now.

Most baffling thing was that she was biracial. She was raised by her white mother.

I hate it when 'we' say stuff like 'These white folk better get this merchandise or whatever, they know how us jiggas steal' and start laughing and raise their hand like they want a high five on that foolishness?

I hate when 'we' get all Malcom X-Black Panthers over some bull-junk. I was at my young son's basketball game. My son's team was all black. The team he was playing against was mostly white. Whenever the ref made a call against our team some of 'our' parents got skrait ig-nant. "You dont want me to meet you at your car". "This is racism. Ya'll predjudiced". BTW, One of the two ref was black. I WAS NOT ready for one of 'our' parents to stand up and start yelling "We love our kids like ya'll love yours". I was like..............ummmmmm......maybe I missed something. I definately dont remember the ref yelling, Hey, you jiggas, you dont love your kids. I could do nothing but SHM because the child of that particular parent had been retained twice. Only if we could get that rowdy about some school books, life would be all good.

Okay I just left Wal-Mart and the lady who was working the dressing room was practically yelling across to the women's section... "Girl yea, me and my daughter went to Bingo last night. Chile I had won and she won!" then the phone rang... "Hold on girl..." and she talked quietly on the phone but as soon as she hung up... "Girl these white folks get on my nerves sometimes, I tell ya..."

But every time I go home I deal with it. I have some of the most ghetto-fied cousins in the whole entire world I swear. I am the "white-sheep" of the family. i cant even describe some of the stuff they do. Talk loud in public, get crunk with people in public etc... One of them even got into a fight with her boyfriend in public. In the parking lot of Sam's... I was too embarrassed...

I attended someone's graduaton ceremony last weekend. Some of the people in the audience and walking across the stage were so ghetto.

The people in the audience were shouting things like "YEEEEAAAAH", "OKAAAAAY", "We be clubbin'!", "Ooooh thank ya JAYSIS, my baby's graduating!", "Go ahead with your bad self!"

There were people walking across the stage dancing, lifting up their hands, posing, and a few even did flips.

wow, i had 2 scenarios in 24 hours! and its only feb. 6--what does the rest of the month have in store?

1. so in one of our building meetings, where there are approximately 12 black people in the building, we we're taking a vote on something, and im sitting next to my friend (another black woman which i'm often mistaken for and vice versa). so as everyone is writing on their ballots (quietly), this black guy looks up and says something like "i almost couldnt recognize you two. you know we cant all sit together, how will they know who's who?"

which clearly as a joke, but since 1. ive heard that soooo many times already, and 2. we're 3 of the 4 black people in the room, it was definitely an awkward silence.

clearly i was pissed, moreso because he always plays the "hey im the token gay black man, so i can say whatever i want cause im a diva who tells it like it is" and sometimes its not cute.

so in response, i say, "hey jaron, remember that one time you made an ass of yourself in front of everyone?" and left it at that.


2. yesterday, the majority of staff was working on bulletin boards. one RA comes to me in front of everyone and says "what do you think of this for a bulletin board: put a bunch of black people's pictures up and a caption that says "its black people's month: appreciate!"

now im giving him a "youre an idiot" look, but i respond with, "i'll submit your query to the council of black people and we'll get back to you in 2-5 business days. is that enough time for you?"

and he's like, "im not asking for permission, i just wanna know if it's a good idea." and im like "clearly you are. as long as youre making a bulletin board every other month that says "it's white people's month: again!" do what you ya gotta do."

the problem is, my seething sarcasm is taken for amazing un-PC humor on my staff...

the sentiment goes past skin complexion. i feel similarly when someone my age acts a fool, or when another female does/says something stupid, or even when another NYU shows their @$$ and makes me out to be "another rich, spoiled NYU kid who knows too damn much"

which if you know me, im anything but.

to answer your question, yes, i do look at everyone as individual, but not everyone looks at me as individual.

OMG you took it back for me. When I graduated, this was exactly how the kids acted. I didn't have to worry about my family acting an azz, but the other graduates - oh wow!

You had people walking across the stage doing the bankhead bounce, raising the roof, pimp walking across the stage. Man, I was so happy to get out of that high school, and never look back.
