I am a sucker for any rush story! I don't know why, but I get a small thrill when there is a new XO in the making! And I also love the SEC threads but I do not read all of them. I did take a special interest this year in UGA, Alabama, as well as Auburn due to the number of girls that i know participating this year. And I will admit, I am partial to retro recruitment threads!

In your last post, you said that she accepted the bid. Are you willing to share the news which group she has joined?

I do hope that your daughter enjoys her new sisterhood, and has the opportunity to expand new leadership experiences!

I knew a girl at Auburn--a beautiful girl, who had been the biggest fish ever at her high school, and whether this is PC to say or not, the high school happened to be on the "wrong side of the tracks" (she grew up in my hometown, and back then the alums had a lot to say about who their SEC actives rushed) and was dropped by all the "top tier" sororities, and for whatever reason got released from rush. Come bid day she took a snap bid to one of the "not good" sororities. This girl was beautiful, articulate, intelligent, and quite frankly the prettiest girl in that sorority. They put her up for EVERYTHING, and being outstanding as she was, she got EVERYTHING..this made quite an impression on me. I saw many girls who had been huge fish in their high school ponds become just another fish in the pond in their "top tier" groups, while this girl racked up many prestigious honors, like War Eagle Girl and Glom Beauty. When my girls were going through rush I made sure they knew this story because there are lots of lessons here, and sometimes being a "big fish in a little pond" is not a bad place to be!

I think this is an awesome sentiment! I think a lot of these girls think they are above these non-"top tier" chapters. Too bad...they often miss out on a lot if they refuse to join a chapter that actually wants them!

I was a Rho Chi years ago. I had a transfer woman in my group who had come from a top tier private college to our state school. She was just an ordinary looking girl but with a great sense of humor and outstanding grades. She had transfered due to family financial reasons. She was cut at skit day by all groups. We sat in the private room set aside for these situations for 45 minutes! She was so distraught! It took a while but I found that she had gone thru recruitment at her previous school and was cut there as well. How absolutely devastating for a young woman who obviously had assets no one else could see! I felt so bad for her and knew I was not offering anything nearing the amount of sympathy she needed - no matter how hard I tried. She left that day looking so sad and I cried even more! Fast forward two years....I was at a PH meeting and there she was! She had COB'd another group and was their PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!
Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. I greatly admired this woman for having the guts to try a third time and finally getting the brass ring. She was so polished and so self assured that I went up and gave her a big hug. I've never been prouder of anyone in a GLO than I was of her. It can happen.

I tried to Google and it asked me if I meant "Glam Beauty". Typo maybe?

ETA: I think she means this...

The Glomerata is Auburn's yearbook. So a "Glom Beauty" is a yearbook beauty.

My daughter did not take the bid. I fully understand the reasons. I think she needs to make her own mind up and be where she can be happy. I thank you for helping me through my worries and questions. I believe that things will ultimately work out as they are meant to be......

Good luck! Let us know next fall what she decides about re-rushing and how it works out.

It sounds like you gave her a lot of really good advice and support, which probably helped her make the right decision. If she wants to take this year to think about rushing again next year, I would suggest that she try to join campus organizations that have lots of Greeks as members. This will give her a chance to get to get to know girls from different houses, and if she clicks with any of them, they will certainly help her out during rush next year. The sororities' websites will usually list the organizations they're involved in. I hope she puts this behind her and has a great freshman year! My Kappa big sis got laryngitis during her freshman year rush and had to drop out right before pref night. She re-rushed as a sophomore, and everything worked out, but she was actually really appreciative of the year she had to find her place at Carolina on her own, and she always encouraged me to keep up non-Kappa friendships so I would have as broad a social circle as possible.
