Now, Fear & Loathing... I couldn't sit thru it. Maybe I should read the book. I can sit thru the most incoherant movie, but this one was superbly done cuz I felt like I was high as h*ll. I couldn't hang.

Ok, more movies I've seen. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, HILARIOUS!!! Just as dry in humor as [i]The Royal Tennenbaums[i]. I loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed The Butterfly Effect. I need to own that. Run, Lola, Run was also a good one. I thought Dirty Pretty Things was OK, not as great as it had been played up to be, but it was good. Also, [i]Dark Days[i] was REALLY good!!! Documentaries are my newest addiction. Netflix is my enabler.

And, yes; '99 was a good year in other respects as well (namely in music). I guess there may have been some sense of urgency for something good due to all the Y2K drama.

We've seen most of the same flicks; I'll have to check out Dark Days. I'm also feelin' docs these days. There were a lot of good ones that came out last year and in 2004 (i.e. Super-Size Me, Oscar winners Born Into Brothels and March of the Penguins, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Murderball, Mad Hot Ballroom, Grizzly Man...just to name a few

).

Girl, you are worse than my boss, got me addin' movies left and right. Mad Hot Ballroom is getting moved to the top of my queue; I LOVE BALLROOM DANCING!!!!!

Is this the documentary about the kids learning to dance and compete? I was hyped about that when I saw the trailer, and then I forgot about it.

One obscure movie that I have to give a thumbs down was Mystic River.

I wasn't feeling it.

It sure is...and it was *GROSSLY* overlooked for an Oscar nomination this year!!!

I feel the same way abou Mystic River. I had to give it a second look to give it a more favorable "review"; it just didn't "sing" with me the first time I saw it. What I *did* know when I saw it was that Sean Penn had the Oscar in the bag (esp. for that scene when he found out about his daughter).

I love Magnolia and American Splendor as well (yet another overlooked performance by the Academy {for Paul Giamatti}).

I have some "guilty pleasure" obscure movie favs as well...gotta think 'bout 'em...more movies to list later...

I took a course in the history of film and fell in love with documentaries, in particular 'Hearts and Minds'. Do these count as obscure (?), 'cuz I got a couple: 'Capturing the Friedmans', and 'Roger & Me' (although Michael Moore gets on my nerves, this movie hit close to home, both literally and figuratively).

I also like war movies like 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Full Metal Jacket'...and they might be considered obscure...

Hell, I'm lying. I like all movies since I don't have cable/local television and rely on the local library as my sole source of entertainment.

Well, both movies share the same title, but the latest is *not* a remake (it won an Oscar for Best *ORIGINAL* Screenplay; hence, it isn't a remake...two *totally* different films...)

With that said, the first Crash *was* interesting in a very erotic WTF sorta way. James Spader was *SOOOO* sexy!!!

I can't get enough of Sideways either! It was one of my top 3 favs of 2004. Can't wait to go see "wine country" for myself one of these days!

I'll have to check out Hearts and Minds. I saw the other docs you mentioned, and I agree about Michael Moore (I agree with his politics for the most part, but he can be heavy-handed and over-the-top at times; I think he'd be taken more seriously if he'd just stop beating a dead horse. Oddly enough, I enjoy war flicks as well. Black Hawk Down and Tears of the Sun struck a chord in me.
