Obscure movies...
Okay Bamboozled, I am gonna steal your thunder and start this thread, lol...
I am a fan of movies that give me a headache. Why? Who knows, because it is not like I can ever find people who want to discuss them with me, lol. What are some obscure movies y'all have seen? What would you recommend? Mulholland Dr. for sure!! Requiem For a Dream - this movie is REALLY an eye opener. It is about drug abuse. If I was a teacher in high school or something I would definitely show this film to students. It is kinda graphic though, so I may have a hard time with parental consent, lol. Quills - Hmmm...just crazy. Some say that American Beauty was "obscure", but that is my favorite movie of all time. |

Dang librasoul, I just PMd you and said I was going to come start this thread. It was taking me forever, so thanks. I love this topic.
I saw Requiem for a Dream and loved it. It was very disturbing, though. I mean, it bothered me for days after I watched it. I just felt dirty or someting. It definitely offers a true depiction of the ugliness of drug addiction. But, didn't the mother crack y'all up??? Mulholland Drive - Saw it, think I loved it, but can't quite comment on it yet. Natural Born Killers - Now this movie is VERY violent, so if you can't tolerate a little killing, this is not the movie for you. Beyond all the violence, there is a message, though. Freeway - I have a "different" kind of sense of humor, so this is one of my all time favorite movies. Reese Witherspoon is in it and she is just hilarious. The movie is supposed to be a spoof of Little Red Riding Hood, and in a way, it does have some semblance. I have so many quotes I randomly use from this movie. Man, I'm cracking up just thinking about it. A Clockwork Orange - Now this is an older movie, but one of my coworkers put me on to it about a year ago. It has sort of a Sci-Fi feel to it, but man is it obscure. It's a must see classic. Pulp Fiction - Again, one of my favorites. I'm sure most of you have already seen it. Time Code - This movie is a little hard to follow because it is split into four separate squares the entire time. Within each square, a separate story is being told and you have to train yourself to focus on the right one at the right time. By the end, you see how all of the stories are intertwined. It is off the hook. Ok, I have more, but I'm sure I have already totally dominated the discussion. I'll come back with more. |

The mom was kinda funny (her and her peeps) until it started getting serious at the end. I will have to check out Freeway Reese is my girl. |
I don't know about obscure...
but here are some that I thought were 'a little different.'
Fight Club I have to start with this one because the first time I watched it, I had to stop after about 45 minutes cuz it didn't seem like it was going anywhere. The next time I saw it on, I watched the whole thing and was HOOKED. I really like the message it sends, although Tyler Derden is a little extreme. It is now one of my favorite movies. Go I like movies that tell the same story from different perspectives. My favorite part is the menage a trois and the fire. Absolutely hilarious!!!!! Sliding Doors This is the name of that Gwyneth Paltrow flick I was talkin about in the other thread. I still need to see this one more time, cuz I was a little lost, I missed the beginning. Bar Hopping I like this movie cuz it is kind of all over the place. I LOVE the four people eating at the restaurant that all they do is debate stuff and end up agreeing, but changing the original sentence a little. I love it! Memento I know it was mentioned in the other thread, but I still have to say, that movie was really the bomb!!! That is gonna be one of the next movies I buy! Eyes Wide Shut This is by far the weirdest movie I've ever seen. EVER!! My favorite part is when Nicole Kidman is str8 trippin with her conversation while they are in the bedroom. I can't really say the rest made any sense to me, but I really liked this movie. Usual Suspects This movie was good cuz the whole thing was a lie!!! You gotta like that!!! Now, Time Code, I was JUST telling someone about that the other day!!! I could not follow it at all. I didn't last five minutes. And I TRIED!!! But I guess I'm too nosy, lol. There is always one square where the dialogue is louder than the other three. But at the time, I wanted to know what was going on in all of them, lol. I couldn't hang. I'll try it again, though. I'ma rent some of these flicks yall suggested! :) |

I am adding some of my own. Go Fight Club (that was wild at the end) Pulp Fiction Ocean's Eleven was a good one too! The Sixth Sense  There are a couple of of others that I am blanking out on right now. |
There's a difference between obscure and just weird.
Clockwork Orange is a popular film. It is also weird as hell- I hated that movie sooo much, I felt the need to take a shower after I watched it. Mullholland Drive- interesting and odd movie, but obscure? I don't think so. It got a LOT of press and a couple of Oscar nominations. This type of movie is GENERALLY not my thing. I like my books dark, moody and ecclectic. I like my movies funny and witty. I don't like gross. I don't mind profane. I don't prefer deliberately disturbing. Someone pass me a Kevin Smith film! Where's my copy of Clerks ???? |

Heck I even own Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. ANd may I say that DESPITE Shannon Elizabeth, this movie is one of the FUNNIEST I have ever seen. The five minutes in which Chris Rock are int he movie are worth the money alone, not to mention the insanely funny Ben Affleck/Matt Damon scene. I have Clerks too, I am planning on buying Mallrats (yes, I do have some kind of a crush on Jason Lee *g*) the Special Edition, and Chasing Amy too. I just love his movies, point blank. Did you hear that his next project is starring Jennifer Lopez? It is called Jersey Girl. And yet no Jay or Silent Bob! SHould be interesting to see how it goes, since J.Lo + Kevin Smith is not a combo that just pops into your mind! |

OMG, you sound just like one of my ex-coworkers with your crush on Jason Lee. I used to try to point out the unibrow, but she wasn't trying to hear it, lol. I didn't see Jay and Silent Bob, but I will have to check it out! |

By the way, if you liked Clerks, here is something you should appreciate: http://www.powerhouseanimation.com/heroes.html I loved it! |

ob·scure Pronunciation Key (b-skyr, b-) 1. So faintly perceptible as to lack clear delineation; indistinct. 2. Not clearly understood or expressed; ambiguous or vague. So, there is a working definition. So far, I think 90% of the movies mentioned fall into this category. |

I've seen it twice now and at the end I am still sitting there going "what the heck just happened?" Time travel plotlines in general make my brain hurt. |
