I like No Doubt's also but the original guy had way more emotion behind the song.

I got it now. She covered Slayer's "Raining Blood".

Reading through this there are some things I agree on and disagree..

first off no one should ever touch or begin to try and cover any classic song that was amazing the first time around..

Johnny Cash great cover...

Dolly Parton originally sung "I will always love you".. I think its a great song, but then again.. i just think she is just great.. she did a good cover of the song "shine", but i do know that she covered "stairway to heaven".. big mistake..

Uncle Kracker

david bowie ruining "god only knows"

some songs should just be left alone...

Yeah I heard that too... I heard her cover of "Have a Little Faith in Me"-- yeah, it wasn't good.

Faith Hill's cover of "Cry". SHE FUKKED THAT SONG UP! It's by a great artist named Angie Aparo (a guy) and it is so beautiful when HE sings it. It sounds like whining when SHE sings it...LEAVE GREAT SONGS ALONE!
I didn't know this until a friend took me to an Angie Aparo concert here in Athens a few weeks ago. I definately like him singing it more than her! His voice just sends chills!

I once heard Melissa Etheridge do a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road." It was horrible. Only Bruce can sing that song!

(yes, I know this thread is ancient)

Shakira covers "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica.

Leave the classics alone, girl, willya?!

There's a really hideous cover of Kiss On My List on our Muzak at work. It's by a female, I don't know who, but when I find out I will punch her in the face.

Also, Selena Gomez or someone along those lines doing I Want You Back. NO.

I love this cover. It's so moving and relevant to Cash's life and the like. Sure doesn't sound like the original though, but why cover something if you are just going to do it the same

So most people know of and like the song 'Such Great Heights' by The Postal Service.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg&ob=av3e

There are some really good covers of it, ie Iron and Wine and Streetlight Manifesto among others.

Others, like Christcore band Confide, miss the mark.

(secretly I still like it, the chorus is passible)

The more time I spend in the Classical/Broadway world, the less covers bother me. Of course, in that type setting, songs belong to the show/opera/symphonic work and not to the singer/musicians.

HOWEVER, Gwen's Stefani's cover of "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof was a big NO.

Wow, what an old thread.

How about a crappy cover of an already crappy song? Let's go with Footloose by Blake Shelton. Sucks and Kenny Loggins original is bad as it is but not this bad.

A cover that works in both versions: "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash and Social Distortion. Completely different feels for the same song. Also, any of Roseann Cash's versions of her father's music.

Covers that are so strange that they ALMOST work: Anything by William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy.
