Who really buys high end fashion items?

It's not IN, but if you're ever in Chicago, check out the Daisy Shop on Oak Street. I bought a sweet Joop! suit there for about $300 this past January. The owner is very friendly, and really knows her stuff.

I start with the Yellow Pages. Depending on where you are, the listing will be under Clothing-Used or Consignment. Then, I just go and visit. I live in Southern California, so I have easy driving access to many resale stores with a good selection. In fact, two resalers that I've scored with handbag deals are just down the street from my office.

When you get to a resale shop, if they belong to a trade association, they will often have a brochure of other members.

Something to remember, though -- Go often because the stock changes, and if you see something you really like, get it fairly early. It may not last until a reduction. I learned this lesson -- missed out on real Manolo Blahniks, not "Manonos," for $40.

I would love to own a few designer pieces but something classic. Like a nice classic black dress by Marc Jacobs and a pair of manolo blahnik shoes. But I couldn't imagine spending that much money all the time. At this point Bebe and Arden B are my high end stores.

I admit, I'm guilty. I have a blouse that costs an obscene amount, so obscene I can't repeat it.
This is why I have decided to begin a LV support group. All of us who are addicted are encouraged to attend weekly meetings.

I have, but mostly handbags and jewelry--accessories that I can get a lot of use out of. I did order a pair of leather pants from Bluefly which totally rock, but I got them on sale for just $80.

I have shoes that range from Prada to Coach to Nine West to Payless knockoffs.

My closet's mostly a lot of Express, Limited, Tommy, Ralph Lauren, AE, etc. Standard mall brands.

I have everything from Target T-shirts to a mink in my closet and I have to admit, I have no problem paying top dollar for things-----PROVIDED they are classic, fit well and are something I will use often. Unless you are Paris Hilton, I cannot see spending thousands on some item that will be totally passe next season. For example, I am a LV whore myself and when the Murakami bags came out I was salivating. But I just knew deep in my heart that the real thing wouldn't last long and pretty soon there would be a million people running around with fake ones....those bags are actually very hard to find and I feel like if I broke down and bought one everyone would think it was a fake anyway! My husband is on this quest to find me the one I want even if it costs him $2000 but I think he is crazy. (We don't trust the ones on Ebay)

My point is, if you can afford it and you enjoy it I think it's totally fine to buy clothes that make you feel good no matter how much they cost. It's the people who can't afford it who I just wonder what they are thinking.....like the Outkast song that talks about shaking your ass to buy that phat bag but you don't have any food in your refigerator.

I agree, Loehmanns can have some good deals! I got a pair of 400 dollar Calvin Klein Collection pants for 30 dollars! whoo hoo-best deal ever. And they are cute!

I've become pickier over the years, and now quality and fit in my clothes is very important to me.

The most expensive things I used to buy were not expensive at all... until I started shopping with my own money. I felt guilty asking my parents to buy me an expensive skirt or pants, but now that I have no one else to be accountable to, I'm saving for a new wardrobe! I think I'm even going to get a second job to go all out. Whoo-hoo!

One thing I've found for me is that the more expensive clothes fit me better. They just seem to have a touch more material.

Also, way back in this thread, someone mentioned the colors.
Perfect example-I was going to buy my son a Ralph Lauren shirt that was pastel (sherbert) orange. I pulled one out and it was $165.00 Now I'm not about to spend that on a shirt he'd wear and probably get beer all over, so the lady said-"This is our PURPLE (or some color) tag line." I went to another store and bought him the regular tag line for $60 something. There was a difference. The more expensive color was a softer hue. It WAS a better looking color. However, after he get's done washing it 10-20 times-they will look the same!

I saw the most beautiful Channel outfit. WOW was it expensive.
The skirt was black on white polka dots. I see LOTS of white on black, but am searching for the reverse.

If you window shop at the most expensive stores and develop your eye as to what is "high end" sometimes you can find something that will mimic the effect. I do buy a couple of high end items a year, but they must be classic and tailored so they will last a LOOOOOOOOOONG time.

I will NOT skimp on jewelry.

I agree. I grew up in Coral Springs, and I will be the first to generalize that it is an affluent area with a high concentration of the stereotypical spoiled rich kid. I wasn't one of them, LOL, but they were certainly the majority!

yes....they were. I'm from Parkland (the snooty sister city of Coral Springs) so I had friends who would pitch a fit if their father got them a Lexus instead of a BMW.
