For what it's worth, when I was a new member, we were taught to memorize the NPC sororities, and to always remember that sororities & numbers can change drastically from chapter to chapter.

A little humility doesn't mean that you're not proud of your GLO!

Chi-O Stats

"Today, Chi Omega is the largest women's fraternal organization in the world with 240,000 initiates, over 170 collegiate chapters, and over 230 alumnae chapters. Chi Omega is also the second largest women's organization in the United States after the Girl Scouts of America."

I'm not completely sure, but I think the actual number of active chapters now is close to 176. I have no idea how many chapters have been chartered in total.

Though all Chi-O's are proud of being the world's largest women's fraternal organization, I'm sure we would all agree every organization is special in it's own way!

Of course, if the numbers in NiaX's post above are correct, then Chi-O is not the world's largest women's fraternal organization.

you have to be careful....

I think you have to be careful b/c some people (not me but I have heard it) think that being the biggest is NOT something to brag about because you are not being selective enough. Biggest does not always mean best nor does it mean most prestigious and it varies so greatly from school to school. My chapter was an above average chapter, but my friends at another school always used to say things to me like, "GOSH! I can't believe you are an XYZ! At our school you'd never be that you'd be an ABC. XYZ here really is bad/snobby/rich/blonde/ traditional/athletic/ insert something I am not here." You know what I mean. Also, traditionally BGLO's have different colonization rules than NPC. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but the BGLO's at the many schools I've visited/attended never had many members. My last school had a chapter of 2. How can that be a chapter? If I had 1 million chapters of 2 I guess I could still be the "biggest" but really.....
But that is just my experience. It varies greatly where ever you go.

ROFL! This post just reminded me of when I was a Rho Chi and one of my rushees told me that she was the most interested in ABC sorority because it had eight members and must therefore be highly selective

Therein lies the question ... how do you define biggest?

Most undergrad chapters?
Most total chapters (including grad or alum)?
Most people initiated?
Most living people initiated?
Most currently active collegians?
Most chapters installed (even if not active)?

You're going to come up with different answers ... From what I've seen on this thread, Beta Sigma Phi has the most chapters of any women's fraternal org. Most undergrad chapters, an NPHC group will win. You could narrow it down, say, "only collegiate fraternal orgs," or "only NPC orgs." Now clearly Chi O is the biggest NPC org, but I think it's a stretch to call them the biggest women's fraternal org, looking at the numbers of Beta and the NPHC groups.

This is the VERY best type of story to come out of rush!

When I was a Rho Chi, one rushee was only interested in sororities that had blue as one of their colors!

That is funny to hear some of these ideas that people get about which sorority they watn beccause of stupid little thigns like that. Colors and numbers are not a good basis for selection but oh well - whatever those girls seem to want as long as they are happy....kinda odd but very funny.

Sigma Nu is none of the above

I know we are in the top 7 in every category that they use to compare NIC groups.

Top 3 in most from what was said at our 60th Grand Chapter.

We want to be #1

Can't this thread just die? People are getting so competitive! We have all heard these facts repeated over and over... no need to anymore!

While I am proud of being a Delta Zeta, I am more proud of the fact that I am GREEK. Numbers are important, but to be honest, I try and not get caught up in them. We do have the biggest number of intiated women and the reason I think this is so cool is because its makes me think, wow, all these beautiful women share in the same ceremony as I and share in the same experiences as I do. I do not think it is cool so I can tell all my friends and family, "hey, we're the 2nd largest nationally and have the most intiated members". Granted, its neat, but I don't use it as bragging rights.

Every sorority and fraternity is different for a reason. Each has its own individual history and traditions. I think we are all unique and I am proud to call each and everyone of you my greek brothers and sisters...NPC, NPHC, local etc., etc.

Greek love and mine,
Blaire

AOPi may have installed 178 college chapters - but I believe only about 110 of them are still around and active today.
