Well, The Duchess of Cambridge is now in labor!
May she have a safe delivery and may the child she's carrying be healthy and well. :-)

It may be wrong, but I feel the tiniest bit of schadenfreude that even the DoC can't escape the unpleasantness of child-bearing.

It is the great equalizer, right? I'm kind of surprised they (really, any woman) does it naturally as opposed to C-section. I know there's all kinds of pros and cons, but the convenience of the Duchess would seem to be a significant pro.

Well, she's at least lucky enough to be a modern-era royal baby-bearer... I read an article about Renaissance era royals being confined to a dark room with no light except a roaring fire in the braizer (even if it was July) and about 70 witnesses to make sure that there was no baby-swapping. Of course, several hundred years before that, the royal consummation also required witnesses...

We stood in the little room in Edinburgh Castle where Mary, Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI, after a really, really prolonged labor...something like 2 weeks! How is that even possible? At least there was a window.

The window (and even the keyholes!) would have been covered. No natural light. This, if course, was to ensure a male heir, because it was still belived that the baby's gender was determined at the moment of birth.

I guess the rush to change the policy on inheritance was for naught, but congrats to them! That's going to be one beautiful baby. Good thing the hair comes from the mother.

I know that HRH is probably getting ready for bed, but I'm sure her face looks something like this:
Congratulations on becoming a great-grandmum, Ma'am!

So now we wait who-knows-how-much-longer to fill in the blank: "His Royal Highness Prince _____ of Cambridge."
