Yeah, but the internet wasn't very popular back then. Dial-up was slow, too.

That's not surprising.

When I was an undergrad there (early 80s), there were about a dozen fraternities/sororities, all local, because the university (at the time associated with the Southern Baptists) didn't allow any to be associated with any national group. (I head that one was, and was immediately 'kicked off campus').

All took greek names similiar to real national groups, BUT 'hide' them in their names. The TKEs were the "The Knights Eternal", the BEs were the "Brothers in Eternity" and the like. They would wear stitch with the greek letters, held rush, did hell week, etc. (for all I know, they might have been better behaved if they HAD been part of a national group and had to follow their rules...).

Since the university went independent, this rule was dropped and AFAIK, all the locals have now associated with national groups.

Smile ZBXi derived from ZBT

Replying to an earlier post, The ZBXi frat in Geneseo was originally founded as ZBT, but after just a few years, the fraternity decided that it need not have a religious focus, and should not be restricted in any way socially, so Zeta Beta Xi was formed.

Since then, ZBXi has consistently been one of the biggest and most admired fraternities in Geneseo.

oh goodness! I know!!! I'm part of Phi Mu FRATERNITY since it was founded before Panhellenic or the word sorority was even founded! ADPi was also founded before all of this but their nationals changed them to a "sorority" I believe but my nationals wanted to keep the Phi Mu Fraternity tradition. it's insanity I'm also part of the AKPsi business frat so I'm a sister & brother in 2 frats.

2 of my friends just got initiated into SAI! they love it and both are in a npc too!

I thought Phi Mu didn't change from Philomathean Society until 1904, which was after the NPC was founded in 1902. The Adelphean Society didn't even become Alpha Delta Pi until 1905 (after being Alpha Delta Phi), and this is all after Gamma Phi Beta founded in 1874, and "sorority" came into use. I'm not following your logic.

Yes, Phi Mu remained as the Philomathean Society for some time before changing their name.

There is no logic there, sister.

sorry for not explaining. I believe our nationals chose to keep "fraternity" because the founding date of phi mu was earlier than the word sorority was created. so, they kept with the real founding date and not the name change. =)

I see what you're saying, but I think the missing logic comes from saying that "nationals chose to keep 'fraternity.'" Before the name change, wasn't it the Philomathean Society? That being the case, wouldn't it be that, given its founding date, Phi Mu chose to call itself a fraternity rather than to "keep" fraternity?

I guess nationals felt that since when you switch over to greek letters you're either a fraternity or sorority, they "kept" fraternity because if it would've been founded with greek letters, it'd be a fraternity. we're called women's fraternity, which is pretty funny to me, but that's how they want to keep it. and I mean "kept" also because I believe older orgs have changed from fraternity to sorority, not "keeping" fraternity, at least what I've heard.

The only "sorority" is Gamma Phi Beta, correct?

Nope. I know ADPi switched their name. There are a few more as well.

The list of NPC sororities and fraternities, as provided in the thread "Are you are fraternity, or a sorority?"

Per the list, the NPC has 15 fraternities and 11 sororities.
