If the word has already been defined, then the people who originally coined the term are the ones who truly know how to use it. If later people want to distort the meaning of the word in an attempt to give it the meaning they would like it to have, that's fine. It's really not a big deal

Plantations are just gated communities. That is all. On HHI, the first 5 gated communities were named after the 5 big plantations of yesteryear. No negative connotations.

Where else do you have the upper bar, lower bar, LIGHTED dance floor (oh baby), your darts area, pool area...
Oh wait, its the only semi good bar left in Clarion.

Before trying to make some kind of judgemental remark, maybe you should look into the context of the statement. We were talking about Hilton Head Resort. The gated "Plantation" areas are where about 99 percent of all of the wealthy, socialite southeners are located. The main parts of the island are always filled with trashy northen tourists that we don't like to be around.

see, even though I've been back since I still remember it as the "go there on Sunday or in the middle of the day cause nothing else is open" bar. I have a very vivid memory of sitting what is now the lower bar while Fatal Attraction played on the big screen - sex scenes and all. Oh how nice.

I'm going to be in Georgetown tonight which means Old Glory.
In Athens I would go to Beauregards.
In Charlottesville I would go to Virginian or Coupe DeVilles
In Lexington I would go to Charlottesville
In Atlanta there are a ton of options.

A lot of people don't consider Texas to be the South. I would consider east Texas to be Southern, maybe.
