Mitchells will always be, in my heart, the frattiest of fratty bars. I'm assuming that "fratty" is meant is a compliment, right? ('Cause when I was in college it referred to boys who would get all excited to go to a mixer, down J&C all night and then be mortified with they went too hook up with a young woman and found that his, um, equipment had gone to sleep and would not be waking up soon. Brian from Kappa Alpha Order at UVA: I'm talking to you, son. I have to give credit to Mary Lee for regaling us with some very entertaining stories when she got back from Charlottesville the next day :) So, I'm assuming Fratty is now a GOOD thing?????)
Anyhoo, back to Mitchells. It was a dive. A bit out of our comfort zone since it was within spitting distance from the Hill District, where scary, mean locals lived. It always smelled like stale beer, the booths were covered in red naugahyde and duct tape. But every monday night after 9, it would fill to the gills with everyone who was anyone in the Greek system. I spent my 21st birthday in the back booth surrounded by sisters and "fratty" admirers and, although I don't remember exactly how I got back to my room, I was perfectly fine and untouched. Well, except for the court jester's had that said "Kiss me I'm 21" on it  Pittsters, is this place even there anymore? It was on the corner of Center Avenue and, damn, I can't recall the cross street. Right across the street from a Giant Eagle. |
I like sh*tty hole in the wall dives....great atmospheres.
On a serious note, this thread could be good, hopefully it wont get deleted. |
Do you go to school in Tuscaloosa? My paternal grandfather went to college at UA and he would tell us about the crazy things he and his brothers would do at this one dive who's name I CANNOT remember! I talked to him shortly before he passed on a couple of years ago and he mentioned it in a story saying it's still there to this day but I can't remember. And of course, my grandmother, poor misplaced belle that she is, either won't tell me or can't remember! (she's pretty sharp, so I'd bet the former!)

well, galettes is pretty much a dive. pretty nasty place. pissing on the walls, pretty much anything you could think of

What you refer to is medically diagnosed as "Whiskey Dick". To make sure others used that term, I searched a dictionary and found the definition:

If you go to Kent then you already know, the answer is Glory Days.

Is there still a bar in Kent called the Rathskellar? I once spent the weekend at my best friend from high school and we went there with a bunch of her sisters. I had a great time until her roommate came up to me and asked if I could please put my lavalliere in my pocket and wear her lavalliere for the night (back before drinking in letters was the deal it is today) so that people wouldn't know I was a member of a sorority that was apparently not "top tier" there. I would have told her what do do with her lavalliere, but I felt that would be disrespectful to my best friend andall of my friends back in that sorority at Pitt so I just ignored her. Oh, and the next night we went to a party at a place called the University Motel. I think it was one of those charge by the hour places! Fun times, though. |
I think the most fratty bar here is the G-man. Interestingly, it's not a dive bar. It's more of a popped collar kind of bar...total sausage fest. I think it's the only bar in town that the line for the mens' room is longer than the line for the ladies' room.
Myself, I'm personally a dive bar kinda girl...the kind of bar that's darkly lit and has wooden tables and benches (all carved up with peoples' initials and names and dates of bar tours). |
