Scientology....thoughts?

So Issac Hayes quit South Park over the Scientology episode....so bagging on any other race, creed, religion or anything else was okay, but not that?

Talk about intolerance.

Doesn't ANYONE else find it odd that the most prominent people who practice that stuff are rich celebrities who can afford to pay $100,000 a year to be enlightened?

Here's how I think of it:

If someone offered you the opportunity to join a 'hip' organization that was really just a pyramid scheme, and you'd jump in at the top, wouldn't you leap at the chance?

Now, combine that with some sort of nebulous promise of salvation, and you've got quite a deal indeed . . . I can't really say I wouldn't hit it.

I don't know about Hayes, but I have heard and read that scientologists "courted" Tom Cruise, showering him with attention and pampering him when he visited their scientology center.

Does anyone actually know someone that is a Scientologist????

There is a Scientology Church in downtown Toronto but I have never seen anyone in there or anyone go in there.

Other than these freaky celebrities, who actually practices Scientology?

Who knows. The scientology center that was at my school always looked closed, which made it even more freaky.

My mom dealt with the scientologists when she sold computer stuff to them. She said it was odd because she had to have some sort of "security" clearance from them to go to the computer room to check stuff out, there was always someone with her (she could never be in the "compound" by herself in a room, and get this....there is an empty office fully furnished with a sidebar that had a box of cigars and whiskey on it for none other than L Ron himself who apparently is going to "come back" someday. woohoo.

I think that the best definination of the word "cult" would be:

any religious org. that requires money from its adherents

where knowledge is not equally accesble by all members, or where increased ammounts of payments are required for "higher teachings"

This is different than if its a class and there are legitmate costs to teaching you something.

But the Church of Scientology seems like to know the whole truth of their system you need to pay money to learn it and then you'll get better.

And who the heck would start out a religious relationship with someone based on a personality test? Take the time to get to know me and my spiritual path before telling me I suck at life and need to change.

I have two acquaintances who are Scientologists. One went to college with me, one is in APO. They are both aggressive and disturbing to me.

I bumped this thread because I wanted to make everyone aware of yet another deceptive practice of Scientologists: "The Way to Happiness." I will not give their website any traction, but google it if you want to see it.

A member of APO went to a fb group trying to recruit people to march in a parade on behalf of "The Way to Happiness" which they describe as a non-religious movement. It's a front for Scientology. So when you see them, be aware.

I recently finished Jenna Miscavige Hill's memoir Beyond Belief about growing up in the Sea Org. She is the niece of the leader of Scientology. Frightening and so sad at the same time. This "religion" separates children from their parents at a ridiculously young age and turns them into what is essentially slave labor for the cult. I highly recommend it and the website she founded with a couple of other women: exscientologykids. Tony Ortega's blog is also highly educational. This is a harmful, criminal organization that needs to be stopped.
