I cried like a newborn baby! Then I opened up all my gifts and fell asleep wearing all my nalia, like a little kid on Christmas! The work began immediately the following week with our first fund-raiser to benefit a residential center for terminally ill children.

i smiled and laughed and hugged and took pictures and threw up my pinky and stumbled home sick. once i drove myself home, i gathered my gifts into my bed and went through them. i slept for 2 days straight--i'd started succumbing to a cold and sinus infection the night before so i was a mess. my voice was gone by the end of the rededication hymn.

but it wasn't until i FINALLY got my pearls *last night* that i was completely overwhelmed by emotion--we just got our certificate and our pins yesterday. i got so choked up and couldn't stop looking at it. i showed my mom-in-law and she was all happy (my sponsor), then i looked at it some more. oh and i sent for my login to the website and updated my info today. and i looked at that beautiful badge some more. i finally feel official

breaks my heart to see badges on ebay. they are so precious. i wish i could buy them all to ensure that a soror had them. too bad i'm a broke, ph.d. student. i got my pearls and i have a heart to collect those lost pearls just floating around.

just waiting on my history book now :/ i guess after boule.

I crossed on 04/04/04 at 11:20 a.m. I was so happy. I hugged my mother to death. She pinned me and afterwards I just held her and cried. When I checked my voicemail on my phone she had called to tell me that by the time I got the message not only would I be her daughter I would also be her Soror. But needless to say I went to my boyfriend's(at the time) house and slept for what seemed like forever.

Its hard for me to talk about what I did...

because i get emotional...I remember thinking i'll never make anyone who had anything to do with my admission into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated regret their decision. I remember feeling like there was a weight on my shoulders...the kind of weight that you feel when your mom tells you that when you walk out of the house you're not just representing yourself but your family. So the first thing I did was thank God, prayed to stay on the path He'd carved out for my life, and yes like so many other Sorors I cried.

first thing i did as an AKA

Besides doing all the chants, stances, taking loads of pictures, and saying the call in my sleep...I did several programs and community service events. Most importantly.....I attended the South Atlantic Regional Conference in Atlanta, GA.

The first thing I did as an AKA was call my mother (she was unable to attend my ceremony), then I called my best friend, then I took pictures. After the luncheon, I went to sleep and slept for a day and a half.

I feel so silly but I am crying reading this post!!!

Anyway like so many others have shared I too cried as my good friend pinned me at my initiation ceremony. I started to get that welled up feeling in my gut and I took one look at my friend and we both started doing the UGLY cry!!! We were crying so hard she couldn't even get my pin on right, another Soror had to come and help us. I'll never forget when she told me, between sobbing cries, "I love you and I am so happy that you are my friend and now my Soror". Yall I was so moved by the love in that room I still tear up thinking about it.

Immediately after it was offical we sang the hymn and I hugged every Soror in the room. Then we took pictures for what seemed like hours and then went to a public luncheon where we were showered with gifts of the Pink and Green kind. We threw up the pinky so many times my finger was sore!

I called my Soror Aunt, my Soror Cousin, and my fiance (a non greek who was more supportive that I though he would be).

The following week I attended my first sorority meeting at which new officers were installed, and had a get together with my "fellow initiates" were we all attempted our first Skeeee Weeee. It was a mess yall. Some of us were better at it than others... but it was all in the name of AKA love!

ttt

And I just realized that I never answered this.

Hugged my grannie, who was there. Hugged a bunch of my lss (and there were a lot of us.) Took lots of pictures. Helped my #15 with a minor crisis (lol), and then celebrated with family and friends. Finally, slept. I could not believe how exhausted I was.
