Thanks for hating on the Cougs...I can't stand them either (sorry SigKapAlumWSU). That mascot is just a glorified Kitty-Cat. I'd rather have Beaver Fever or Go Ducks! any day.

Ya gotta say that if you met a wild animal in the forest... the one animal I wouldn't want it to be was a cougar. I will forever be frightened by those things. Have you ever seen one of those things attack? But yeah... screw the cougs (no offense) but your duck comment was way out of line... The ducks are worse than the cougars. The beavers are good...

The dictionary definition of mascot is "A person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team." The etymology is "[French mascotte, sorcerer's charm, mascot, from Provençal mascoto, sorcery, fetish, from masco, witch, ultimately from Medieval Latin masca, mask, specter, witch.]"
The distinction between a symbol and mascot is the symbol represents an organization while a mascot acts as a charm to protect or bring good luck to the organization. Looking at it in the context of a football game, the mascot is not simply synonymous with the team nickname: the mascot is the animal (or person dressed as an animal or character) brought out to the field during the game to bring the team luck.
FWIW.

From one squirrel
I love this thread. For one thing I laughted my way through it and I didn't take offense because I knew once you found out why we are the squirrels you would understand.
I was one of those girls that was taken aback by the squirrel but there were too many other parts that didn't push me off. And once I started looking at the past, there were many signs that pointed me towards AGD. For example.. I was given a squirrel pin when I was in first grade and I thought it was stupid and I tried to give it away a few times but I never did. So that was one sign that pointed me the direction I went.
Another thing is that could be cornie about the use of squirrels is that we come in all different colors... red, white, gray, brown, black...

We also had something called the affirmative action squirrel, but I won't get into that right now.

LOL! My LS told me about a squirrel that attacked a guy at Syracuse University. He was with two of his brothers (can't remember which fraternity but it was a BGLO) all in 'nalia. She said the guy flipped out and started dancing around and squealing!
P.S. I love squirrels! Have any of you actual sat down on the grass and watched squirrels?? Try it!

Ah, I remember this thread.
I wonder whatever happened to the squirrel hater? Wonder if he's still with his AGD gf?

LOL, I have no idea how on earth I missed this thread. I am a card-carrying, tail-shaking, forward-thinking SQUIRREL and I'm proud of it!
Squirrels may just be rodents to some of you, but Alpha Gams everywhere are devoted to our little Skiouros. I wouldn't have it any other way.

This is so funny! Here at EWU the squirrels are EVERYWHERE! I know they'll attack you because they aren't afraid of people, like they'll come right up to you and almost jump on you, but I think they're absolutely adorable! I want one as a pet. Sometimes for fun, we chase them and try to catch them!

In South Carolina, Presbyterian College is the Blue Hose. Not know what that means? Well, it literally means the hose that you wear on your legs. Yes, that's right, their mascot is a woman's undergarment. Actually, I think the blue hose they are in reference of are more like socks, but you get my point. I heard somewhere that they were ranked in a poll as the worst mascot.
(FYI, USC's Cocky is the best mascot in the nation!)

My school's mascot is the beaver. This went over very big especially at women's sporting events.
As for the squirrels, in my neighborhood we have the world's stubbornest squirrels. I have a new "squirrel-proof" bird feeder and they keep trying (with limited success) to raid it even though there is perfectly good bird seed elsewhere for them.
I still brake for 'em though
