SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkeness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

I like how they use the excuse that they are trying to crack down on drunk driving. They had a story on the news here in San Francisco this monring and it showed how four people who were on vacation were arrested because they were intoxicated at the bar in their hotel! The people were supposed to be leaving the next morning, returned their rental car like two days prior and they got arrested. That's jacked up.

I was also watching something on Good Morning America or something that and they had that podunk Catherine Crier on with her "YUPs" just gloating about how this is legal and how she fully supports it and some other blah blah.

I didn't know this was a crisis on the rise? Mass pato to pool jumpings? Who would have thought?!

People do stupid things all the time and they don't have to be drunk to do them.

Who would have thought that this would happen in Texas of all places? I mean, that is the only state where I've seen beer stands inside of malls.

if you are on this board, you would be fine, because this isnt happening at anyplace any of us would ever be caught dead in.

You look at each city and where the top 10 DWI infractions came from (when they arrest someone, they ask them where they were drinking and thats how they populate the list). I checked out both Austin's list a while back and San Antonio's list (cant find it now) and I wouldn't go in 9 of 10 of those bars. In Austin most of them were East of 35 or a few of the fuck-em-up bars on 6th (chuggin monkey) and thats real fun about two times. Undergage UT freshmanchicks with fake ID's puking on my redwings isnt my idea of a chill evening. In SA, its icehouses on the hard-core southside, that ghetto ass Tejano place known as Graham Central Station or the big ass danceclubs. I think they have targeted Howl at the Moon recently, but while howl is fun, its been old now for about five years for me. So with one local exception, I dont plan on kicking back some brews with the local undocumented population, so I dont see it being a problem for me.

The undercover officers arent cool enough to get into most of the bars I drink at. If they flashed the badge to get in, they'd stick out like a sore thumb. Serously, its not the triendiest of people with an assload of game and education that decide to go make $21,000 a year being a TABC officer.

I did Austin this past Friday. Went to the Sugarland / Dierks Bentley / Kenny Chesney concert then hit up 6th street. Fun times! That was a REALLY good show!!

I'll be back in Austin Wednesday - Friday of this week for a work-related seminar. Yay for me!

I'll then be in San Antone Friday - Sunday for St. Mary's Homecoming. Yay for seeing sorority sisters!! (And Andy, hopefully we will get to meet up!)

Well I had AWESOME seats! They were first row in the section right next to the stage. We were about 50 feet from the stage and had the best view, I would say. Ahhh! Yay for Fan Club seating!

I have a quick Greek-related question...
Is anyone here involved with a San Antonio panhellenic alumnae group? I'd like to get involved once I move.
