As far as the study hall hours goes...we can't require new members to do them unless the whole chapter does them...and that's 250+ girls doing study hall hours. My guess if there were 250 girls at the house...there wouldn't be much studying--it's just too much trouble for that many people. So we wait until after Christmas and only require study hall hours for members whose grades fell below our GPA standards.

well, i can understand that. For a chapter of 300, having the entire chapter do study hours just isn't pragmatic.

are there any general differencies between sororities; fo example, that AAA has mostly pretty girls, DG has the smart/nerdy girls or stuff like that?
or it depends on college/university u attend?
and is there anyone from Colgate U here?

you make a good point. this is a good example of how the anti-hazing agenda's have over-compensated in some respects. (just so it's out there, i am one who believes that a challenging pledge education period is beneficial...i'll leave it at that).
correct me if i'm wrong, *without getting into specifics*, but don't most initiation rites outline some form of earning or gaining the approval of the brother/sister hood? what i mean is that a lot of our founders did not intend for membership to just be handed out like free popcorn. an individual must prove themselves worthy of becoming privy to the secrets and rituals of the organization.
we can agree to disagree (and i know we will), but i think the limits on what activities can be part of pledgeship are far too strict because of anti-hazing laws. As many have mentioned in this thread, some things are just positive bonding experiences for the pledge class and are in no-way harmful, but are banned because they barely fall into the category of hazing.

That's a loaded question, and one that has been discussed many, many times here on GC with no resolution.

Re the letters, this has been discussed many times on GC. Many groups have an open meaning that corresponds to their letters - for example, ASA's is Aspire Seek Attain - so saying "they don't know the meaning behind them" isn't the case. However, if you have a meaning behind your letters that I would never gather without initiating into your group, I personally would not tell you what to do about that. I'm just pointing out that for some groups the wearing letters isn't an issue as ANYONE can see our open meaning.
I don't like to hear people say "I wanted to be hazed." What you mean is that you wanted to do fun pledge activities, like RedRoseSAI said. I doubt anyone wants to be forced to drink, beaten physically, or told that they are a worthless piece of crap. That's what hazing really is. If you mean "I wanted to do scavenger hunts and interview sisters" then say so. Not being specific only furthers the (untrue IMO) view that these things are hazing.

You are not going to get all answers here on GC!
The only way your going to find out about The Different Sorority Organizations is to get to know them, PERIOD!
If you are so afraid about what is being done this soon in your young life, then please dont join.
Harsh, no, I think not.
There must be something good about Greeks or there wouldnt be so damn many of us who beleive in Our GLOs, or for that fact even be on this site posting, intermingeling, discussing, crabbying or what ever.
What You See, is what we be!

They have assignments that we call studying for your test based on the information you recieve on the sorority and you sign the paper and you're an official member after you take the oath. THAT IS ALL.
