My town had a very diverse group of lower and upper middle class so there were classy but small parties like mine and big bashes with professionally done invitations and the party at the Radisson like some of my friend's had. I was never at a party with escorts but there was usually a candle ceremony. For every candle the girl chose either family or friends to speak of and then they came up and helped her light the candle. It was sweet.

Yeah the candle thing! That's was it was! Not the escort thing .

The Junior League is for women who are out of college, and usually at least in their late 20s, but most of the chapters are filled with middle-aged women. They sponsor the deb balls much in the same way that say, the Links or AKA might. Each member sponsors a deb, and sometimes daughters of members are debs.
My sister had hers the summer between freshman and sophomore year in college--and I think that's the "traditional" age, if not a year older. It has really become another HS extra-curric, unfortunately, and that's why you see 16 year olds having deb balls.

The JLT doesn't sponsor a debutante ball, though we are working with high school aged girls in a mentorship program. This year's new members include younger women who are just out of university, so our youngest new members are actually 22-23 years old! I find it interesting that some leagues still sponsor debutantes. Maybe JLT can look into that in the future.

The New York City Junior League accepts members as young as 16. I recall some girls from my school joining. I know at least one became a debutante. Perhaps their mothers were members, but I don't remember. I just wonder if membership in Junior League is necessary to be a debutante at their ball.
The debs I knew came out during winter break of their freshman year of college except for one who waited until she was 21.

This link brought me to the Tiffany website. When I clicked on US, it shows the Elsa Peretti initial letter "A" sterling silver pendant. Is that what you bought for her? My sister has that, and it's very pretty. I have the tear drop pendant.

I have never really heard of debutante balls in nyc. I have been to very fancy black tie sweet 16's though. Plus a lot of my friends didn't have very big sweet 16's because they had very fancy Bat Mitzvah's.
