Well, I didn't learn about him during my pledge period. But in alchemy, there is the philosopher's stone, which is used by alchemists to make the elixir of life. The elixir of life can remove impurities, turning anything into gold. If someone drinks it, it can make that person immortal (like in the movie). During my pledge period I learned about how famous alchemists tried to create the philsopher's stone or tried to find it. But I still thought it was cool how she used real stuff in the book.

Re: Re: Hey

Thank you!

I mean I LOVE hearing about kids having to fight to put a book down. These days it is difficult to find a kid who LOVES to read.

Not to offend, but there are quite a few people who diss Harry Potter who have NEVER read the books. My mother in law (who is Pentecostal) is a prime example. Wizards=evil=Satan in her eyes.

So I asked her about "The Wizard of Oz"
Her reply: "That is different!"

I have YET to hear of a kid commit a crime because he got the idea from a Harry Potter book.

I plan on getting the book on Friday, when I get paid (we have a double employee discount day)

Yeah, her name does give you a good feeling about her automatically. There's no way she can turn out to be evil with a name like Lovegood (crossing my fingers). She cracks me up because she seems to be so nonchalant about everything.

I think, by this time, if I were Harry I would want to just live life as an adolescent and not be burdened by knowing someone wants ME DEAD.
Okay, I have to agree with you here. I hadn't really thought of it that way. I guess I'd be a little pissy, too, if I'd been through everything that he has. Plus, he's fifteen now and I guess by virtue of being a teenager, he has a right to bug out every once in a while. But, he was GOING OFF in the beginning, LOL.

Since Wizards are known for their intelligence, not their physical strength, maybe someone like Don Cheedle would better fit the role?.
I'm picturing Michael Clarke Duncan because the book describes him as tall, black, bald (I think I may have made the bald part up, I'll check) and with a hoop earring in his ear. I would much rather see Don Cheedle, though.

LMAO @ you for snapping on the kiddies!

No picking on the kiddies!!

Ha! She wasn't a kiddie! She was twenty-something; old enough to know better! lol

You know, you are right; the description of Shackebolt does include a bald head and an earring - rather piratish, hunh? Maybe Michael Clarke Duncan would fit better than Don Cheadle, or, even better, what about Vin Diesel? Tall (I think), bald, and he may even have an earring. And he is definitely black (no matter what people say). Wait a minute, if he doesn't end up playing a huge part, what about Michael Jordan?! Since he's apparently been kicked out of the whole basketball thing, he may want to start appearing in movies. Ooooh, wouldn't that be nice?!

I read some more of the book at lunch so I'm around page 350 now. Luna Lovegood is turning out to be a little stranger than I first thought. I got the feeling at first that she was simply misunderstood, however, she seems to truly be a little odd; not at all evil or mean-spirited, just a little, well, misguided in some aspects? We shall see what her character turns into. I'm looking forward to watching her evolve.

That new Dark Arts teacher is just AWFUL!! I hope she comes to a Quarrel-type end.

So far, Dumbledore is nowhere to be seen. Wonder what's going on with him? Any ideas?

Back to you later.

Well... I finished the book today!

If it wasn't for the aforementioned child I secured, I would have finished Sunday (quick reality check on why I DON'T want children yet, can't just sit around doing nothing all day). I had a great time at the release party. I was #30 in a line of over 270 people. Also, the aforementioned child (who is 6) was REALLY well-behaved and wore her Harry Potter glasses that night and the following day.

As for the book, I really want to discuss it with someone. I would usually discuss it with PearlEssence, but she doesn't have it yet. GO GET THE BOOK GIRL! I too, was put off by Harry's attitude, but he is more than justified. However, I thought the feelings of jealousy were tied to Voldemort. I was a little peeved that she did not explore the Ron/Hermione relationship thing. Anyway, I thought it was great and after 870 pages I wanted to read more. She also let gave us more info about the scar and why Harry didn't die. I was so saddened by the death of one of my favorite characters, but I saw it coming.

harry

I am so glad that we have a D.A.(Dumbledore's army) right here on GC, lol

Man I am so glad that folks aren't spoiling who dies or anything. I accidently went on a website and this bish told us who dies. I just hope that she's wrong but it ruined it a little for me I won't say who though don't worry!

I'm on page 606 in the chapter "The Centaur and the Sneak" so just skip ahead if you aren't that far

1. Yeah Harry is way darker but J.K. said that it would get darker. I'm personally shocked that Ron got to be a pre-fect. Hermione I expected but well...Ron just isn't a leader. But I understand why Dumbledore didn't put Harry in danger.

2. I am AMAZED at how J.K. ties the books together! She must of knew she would talk about other things in books to come. In Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore talks to Harry about finding a room in Hogwarts he had never seen in the chapter "The Yule Ball" Now in this book we find out that it's really a room and Harry finds The room of requirement. It's amazing that little comments in past books really do mean something in current books and books to come so I soak it all in.

3. FINALLY Harry gets some action! lol. Cho Chang and Harry kiss and kinda go out on a date. I've told people for the longest that she's of asian decent, but folks just wouldnt' listen. It was like they just couldn't picture Harry with someone who wasn't white. I was like Cho Chang? Yeah ok

4. Professor Umbridge is evil! I can't stand her. Hogwarts High Inquisitor my azz!

5. I like Luna. She's loony but she's cool though.

6. Um...Why is Ginny a fourth year? I'm confused. Shouldn't she be a third year? She was a first year in the 3rd book. But it said in one chapter "Ginny and the rest of the fourth years were coming out of class" I was like huh?

7. Can Hermionie and Ron just get it over with and kiss already?!? lol

8. So far I really liked the chapter "St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries" It was very descriptive and I was laughing when they ran into Lockhart there.

Ok that's it, back to reading!

No, Ginny was a 1st year in Book 2, Chamber of Secrets.

Ok, I LOVED the whole idea of Dumbledore's Army. Professor Umbridge was BEYOND power hungry. But she reminds me of people who are in positions of power who do things just becasue they can.

I was at Wal-Mart recently late at night because I couldn't sleep, I picked up some movies (fast and the furious, Shallow Hal) and as I approached the line ..... no joke.... the lines were from the cash register to the middle of the store, I was like what is going on I asked a store rep and they told me Harry Potter's book is about to be released and they only have 200 of them (Is it that serious??)

watchout!

pretty edAKAted: Read the first 4 books and then tell us how high your interest is in the 5th one (like how long you waited in order to buy it). Maybe it is/maybe it isn't that serious.

jill1228: It's addictive, be careful.

Has anyone else finished the book? Are you interested in chatting about it at some point in the near future? I've finished but I don't want to do much more posting in case others haven't.

Looks like I will have to jump on the Harry Potter bandwagon! I feel like I'm missing out! I did see the movie. Loved it. I'm sure I will love the books. Do they sell them in sets? Then I can just buy them all at one time.

I saw the number of pages in the new book Kids really read that much? But like someone said earlier it's always great to see kids read.

I was wondering about your progress. I haven't had much time to read over the past couple of days, but I plan to finish it over the weekend. If you can wait until Monday, I'd love to discuss it with you.

I've seen the first three sold in sets, but not all four. I think you should pick them up this weekend so you can share in our addiction that is Harry Potter.

I'm pretty sure you can get all four...

AHA! Amazon.com comes through again!

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...036711-4353436
Paperback boxed set, $21.67

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...036711-4353436
Hardcover boxed set, $59.99

So if you can't find it at a bookstore (or don't want to pay bookstore prices), try amazon, because the hardcover should *definitely* cost enough to get the free shipping, if you don't mind waiting a little extra time for them to arrive.

And yeah, kids really do read that much. Sometimes you just need to find the *right* book-- if it's interesting, kids will read one long book, or ten hundred-page books, right on through.
