Don't forget The Fresh Market in the South! Although I guess it is more of a gourmet food market than a grocery store.

In San Diego:
Vons
Food for less
Ralph's--which is Kroger owned
Whole Foods
Trader Joe's
Albertson's
Costcos
Walmart
Super Target
Use to have Safeway--but it changed--it was Food Basket, then Lucky's--then something else...
Food Giant's lurking off the 94 freeway
VIP-Asian Markets
Lately on the Eastside of Seattle:
Safeway
QFC--which owned by Kroger
Whole Foods--yeah, they are building one in Bellevue
Trader Joe's
Umjimanya's Asian Markets
Larry's Food Market
Albertson's
That's all I've seen lately for the past month I've lived here...

I'm an old Southern resident (Tennessee for three years), and I remember the Fresh Market.
Grocery stores in OC parallel those in San Diego, but I'd also add Gelson's, another one of these gourmet-style markets.

Denver has many of the above, and I won't take time to name them, but one that hasn't been mentioned, and I haven't seen anywhere else is KingSoopers. Yes, it's spelled that way, and it's owned by Krogers.
We also have Grocery Warehouse which is a discount type place -- kinda like Costco, but with only groceries.
