I thought that Tri Sig sounded too much like Phi Sig so SSS wanted something unique.

We don't have Sigma Sigma Sigma here (although who knows, we're in the process of expansion and five sororities are coming here for interviews in the next couple of months...but anyway..) so I can't argue for that whole issue, but we do have Sigma Pi who hates to be referred to as Sig Pi. I know that this is a chapter thing though (which could be more than one chapter, mind you), the way they see it is that they only have two letters, you can say them both, lol.

But as 33girl said, it will vary. I know that my sorority has a bunch of different nicknames (none of which bother me too much though).

I probably should have said. The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged (1966). Webster's Third New International (1961) and The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Third Edition, 1996) agree that the "h" in "panhellenic" is pronounced.

According to one dictionary I consulted (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language [Third Edition, 1996]), either is acceptable.

Way to cite your sources MysticCat! Because you haven't proven that you know your stuff or anything....

DeltaSigStan - My father is a proud alum from the Delt Sig chapter at Hillsdale College - Hillsdale, MI! It really is only the Michigan chapters? That's pretty weird...

When I was in school everyone called AXO the A Chi O's. My senior year they pushed to get everyone calling them Alpha Chi because they thought there was too much of our nickname in 'A Chi O".

When Tri-Sigma was expanding onto San Francisco State's campus, this was the explanation given to us by their Headquarters' Leadership Consultant.

It made sense to me because we *do* have Phi Sig on our campus...and you can see the ample opportunities for confusing Phi Sig and Tri Sig.

Anyway, if Sigma Sigma Sigma wants to be called Tri Sigma that is their prerogative and I respect that. Who am *I* to tell *them* what they should be referring to themselves as?
