it seems like the wal mart engagement ring commercials are running rampant... there is one on now that is trying to look like the zales one... anyone who gets a walmart ring needs to seriously consider where their relationship is headed... eek
i'd rather have a smaller, quality diamond from a real jewelry store than a big, low quality one..

But there is something worse.......:::shudder:::
All of you Houstonians out there......the atrocity known as Auchan beats Walmart hands-down. We call it "The Freak Show".
Alongside the groceries are the fiberboard furniture kits, low-quality textiles, and row upon row of kids' bikes lined up at the front door. It's hard to explain, but it's *worse* than Walmart. Don't forget the food court that has been featured on Marvin Zindler's Rat and Roach Report more times than I can count.
ITA w/ the people who mentioned Walmart's predatory sales practices. (Driving local businesses under then holding the town hostage to their prices.) There isn't a state in the union that hasn't seen this phenomenon.

I am such a hypocrite. I hate WalMart and everything it stands for. I hate the fact that it takes me forever to pick up six items. I hate the fact that townies with mullets try to pick me up every time I go there. I hate the fact that they strategically position double amputees or blind people or whatever as "greeters" at all the entrances. I hate the fact that they profit off of sweatshop labour and won't allow their workers to organize and give them horrible benefits. I hate the fact that they run all the mom & pop stores out of town. And do you know what I hate the most?
What I hate the most is the fact that it's in my college town, close, cheap, and just as fast as going to four different locations to get everything I need. I hate the fact that they're so good at their dirty tricks and I am so poor in my college state that I must patronize them or go without shampoo.
Evil, evil people.

Marvin Zindler is a reporter who is legendary in his own mind. (Did you ever see the play or film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"? There was a reporter from a local TV station that shut down the Chicken Ranch? That character IS Marvin Zindler!)
Anywho, is current claim to fame is the "Original Rat and Roach Report". Using the Freedom of Information Act, he gets reports from the city Health Dept on all of the restaurants that were inspected that week. He airs them, by name, w/ all of their violations. They get pretty disgusting too.......

I admit it I like Walmart for the most part. And that's good b/c we have 3 superwalmarts in town and only one target.
But the commercials are another story. They drive me crazy.
And I do try to avoid the place around Christmas and the beginning of the school year when there are some STRANGE people there. One day there was a pickup truck pulling into the parking lot with a couple of women in the back and one was talking on a cell phone. Just thought that was odd.

jebus, this is hilarious. i just started two weeks ago part-time as a photo-lab tech in wal-mart. i getting fired this week, for goofin off, playing with the paging system, closing the lab early when i work, and on-the-spot "cost comping."
i really thought, of all the people in the store, the guy in the sleeveless "rock n roll" bleach-stained jeans would enjoy my rendition of David Bowie's "Space Oddity." i was rather good. not as good as that woman in the commercial, but at least American-Idol-good.

I HATE Wal-Mart. I avoid it like the plague. Mainly because I live in the ghetto that is Galveston, and all the unemployed, unwashed masses practically live at Wal-Mart....just thinking of that place makes me angry....
Adduncan, I know who Marvin Zindler is-but I can't take him seriously because of those blue glasses....

It's probably safe to tell you folks.. very few of you in my area (if any).. The secret to getting in and out of Wal-Mart fast is to check out somewhere besides the main counter... like in the Electronics department or sporting goods.
Works fine for me

You people all suck and I think you're just bitter. Parts of this thread really offend me.
For instance, when I was 13, my parents got me a ring that had actual diamonds on it--granted, they were small, and there is NO DOUBT in my mind that it came from Wal-Mart. It is still one of my favorite rings for its beauty and the special occasion. If any of you would seriously cry or leave your man or even give him the silent treatment just because of the PLACE where he bought a piece of jewelry, that is just really freakin' materialistic and I'm disgusted to read you speak. Sheesh.
And maybe I take it a little seriously because my dad has been a Wal-Mart manager for longer than I've been alive and the place practically raised me (ie, Wal-Mart is the reason I ended up moving every other year as I was growing up) My dad actually knew Sam Walton, and Sam was the kind of guy that tried to keep Wal-Mart family oriented. So sue them for trying to depict that in their commercials
I'm not saying Wal-Mart is perfect or doesn't even have any pitfalls that ASK to get made fun of, but why is it Wal-Mart so often? People don't go around bashing GAP or Old Navy or anything frequently, and places like that are just as annoying to shop at.
and ktsnake, I can't BELIEVE you just gave that away!!! I've been doing that for over 10 years now lol

That's funny, because one of my husband's best friends was offered a job in Wal-Mart's corporate offices in Arkansas but when they were going over the particulars of the offer and he told them that he couldn't agree to be available for work three weekends a month because he coached his son's baseball team, Wal-Mart rescinded the job offer. That is family oriented???

I don't know if you're still in school or have graduated already, but I hope you don't mind a piece of wisdom from someone who has been out there in corporate America. You don't accumulate that staggering level of wealth by being all warm-n-fuzzy.
And, I think that saying people "suck" because they don't share your fond view of Wal-Mart is uncouth.

I'm not at all surprised to hear this. One of Mr RedRose's clients is Wal-Mart, and the people at HQ are always working very late, on weekends, etc...MUCH more than with most companies! Additionally, corporate headquarters is a dump - six people in a cubicle, folding chairs in the meeting rooms, etc.. I never shop at Wal-Mart, for so many reasons!

Most of what I know about WalMart's corporate business practices comes from the SLA (Students for Leftist Action) on my campus, and it has to do with sweatshop labour practices overseas. For example, new female employees must undergo and pay for a pregnancy test before starting work. If they are found to be pregnant, they're fired. Based on the way they treat their labourors overseas, I'm not at all surprised to hear the way they treat their employees here.

Thanks for the information. If ever I get down to Houston, I may try to catch this cat. It sounds surreal.
