Mixed Up/Unusual Names Someone Has Called Your Org.

My little sisters used to call Alpha Phi "Alpha Q." For some reason they got the fact htat the "A" stood for Alpha but thought the Phi was a Q.

At my school, we are called Alpha Xi's or just Xi's. We haven't used the term "fuzzie" since the seventies, and everyone around here thinks it's dorky. No offense to my sisters who call themselves fuzzies, I just personally don't care much for the name. I have also had a few GCers think that I am from Alpha Zeta Delta, but I just politely correct them. No big deal.

Chi Omegas here are called Chi O's, Sigma Kappas are called Sig Kaps, Zeta Tau Alphas are called Zetas....etc. etc. Most of the fraternities here are pretty self explanitory, but Kappa Sigmas are called K-Sigs, and Delta Sigma Phi's are called Sigs.

My chapter was totally split on the "fuzzy" thing. Some loved it, some hated it. I don't care either way, I just figured it would make a good nickname when I was signing up for this board.

We sometimes went by Alpha Xi, but that sounds a lot like Alpha Phi, so we were usually called AZD.

Oh I hear your pain. I always get questioned about the pronounciation of the "PHI". I went on a date once who kept calling my sorority "Pi Beta FEE". Even after countless corrections he still missed it. How confusing is this???

Actually, say that really fast and you'll see why that's a way to insult the house. Other girls houses say it here to annoy the Alpha Phis.

"Alpha Q" - That's terrible! We have Alpha Phi on my campus, but we never called them that...!

AOIIBrandi - We have AXO at my school also, and they were always called "A-Chi-O". The only time I ever heard "Alpha Chi" was during one of their rush parties... we (rushees) all left very confused... "I thought there was an omega in there somewhere??" We didn't have Chi O, though... so I suspect they went by AXO so as not to be confused with Alpha Phi.

It doesn't happen that often, but from time to time I'll get people who ask me "What's Zee Oh Bee?" when they see my letters. Now that I'm in Canada, I get "What's Zed Oh Bee?"

I have been called a Delta and I have been called a Zeta. This is unfortunate since both of those names are real ways to refer to real organizations! That usually happens to me in the music building since those people don't normally have classes all over campus where they would be exposed to a lot of greek life...I am their only link

Let's not forget the age old Phi MOO. Drives me crazy. We all understand that saying moo to any girl, regardless of her affiliation really peaves us, but please...this is my sorority we're talking about!!!

For those genuinely confused on the pronunciation it is Phi MU as in Meeeeuuuu no where in there is there an O.

My parents moved up to the boonies in northern michigan a few years ago. I ALWAYS buy my parents AGD mom and AGD dad stuff. Whenever they wear it to their club (They're in the Eagles. Theres NOTHING else to do there) someone always asks "What's A, backwards 7, triangle mean??" They don't even know it's greek letters. My mom is SOO tired of explaining it!!!

Our house had the baseball team over to dinner and I guess one of the guys wasn't clear on all the fraternities and sororities names and he asked what Psi Pi likes to do for socials. The girls at my table just about died laughing! The poor guy got a lot of ribbing from the other guys at our table. It was really funny...I bet he'll never forget that he was at Pi Phi again!

I was a music major in school and we had all 4 greek letter music oriented organizations. One of them is Phi Mu Alpha. As DZSAI girl mentioned in her post, many times music people are oblivious to greek life. Well anyway, some of the music girls we like Phi Mu Alpha groupies and they would shorten Phi Mu Alpha down to "Phi Mu" and tell people "Yeah, we're going to hang out with our Phi Mu boys" or "we're going to the Phi Mu" hayride. Being a Phi Mu myself, it used to drive me nuts. They did not seem to see the difference in the 2 organizations at all. When some of my friends from the school of music realized I was a Phi Mu they would say "Oh I didn't know it was co-ed...I thought it was all guys"

I was also a member of Tau Beta Sigma and people would pronounce the "Tau" as in "Tow" (like towel) but that's probably a common mispronunciation.
