If I'd already made the date with the interest, I would go on the date. If I had been thinking of setting a date for that day, I'd go to the concert.

I'm a little surprised everyone is saying they would go on the date.
I would DEFINITELY choose the concert (or whatever other event I had been dying to go to). I'd explain to the date that my best friend just got these once-in-a-lifetime tickets, and I can't pass it up. Then I'd ask to reschedule. If he didn't understand, and couldn't wait one more day to hang out with me, then screw him.

This!
Ironically, many people would choose to save their dog (with which they have a special relationship) over the stranger, but when it comes to this, they'd rather go out with a "stranger" than spend time with their best friend, to see a band that they've loved forever.

I don't like concerts (I have some ear problems and loud noises really irritate it) so I would choose the date. However, if best friend happened to have tickets to something else that I've been dying to go to I would totally choose that! Like if she had had tickets to the World Equestrian Games this past August I would totally have skipped the date!

I say the dude should've been available from jump and pursuing me a long time ago. If he wasn't, he snooze he lose. I'd rather shave a unicorn's ass than go on a date with him. Nothing could beat that.

"Ok...so there is this hot dude you have been dying to date and then as you make the date this hairy assed unicorn shows up..."

You can't steal the attention away from a unicorn anyway, so the guy really doesn't have a fighting chance.

Pretty much. A day or two isn't going to make a world of difference. I'd pick the concert/event.

LOL. All right, all right.
My only point was that with a bare bones hypothetical, one has to consider possibilities because one will have to live with the consequences.

...this one is a little more realistic.

Not for those of us who are married.
I hope.

Simultaneously? If not, then in what order?
As for the date/concert scenario... I was taught that once you make plans you keep them unless there is an emergency. If I already had plans for a date, I'd keep those plans. If I had committed to the concert first, then I'd go to the concert. It is about committing to plans with someone, not about what I'd rather do. "Sorry, something better came along so I'm ditching you tonight" is unbelievably rude.

You're not exactly ditching them... You're saying, "Something came up.. can we reschedule?" I know that if the tables were turned, and 6 months into dating, the guy said to me, "Oh, yea.. our first date.. that was the night I was supposed to go to blah blah blah".. I'd feel terrible.
And what if the date was the worst date of your life? ..You replaced what could have been an unbelievable night, with an unbelievably horrible one. I'd be pissed at myself forever for missing the event of a lifetime for someone who means nothing to me.
And who says that you have to tell the date the reason you're cancelling, anyway? Just say your dog was stuck on some railroad tracks, you had to save him, and you'd rather stay at home with him because he's suffering from PTSD.

It was a good thing you happened to be wandering past those tracks after you finished watching your parents' home videos.
