ETA: Except when it comes to hose. I can't handle them. Can. Not. Which is considered un-ladylike by some, but it isn't worth it to me.

It's also generational.

I don't understand the hatred for pantyhose.
My feet sweat, and going bare would irritate my skin terribly. We're talking blisters. Plus, going bare in the winter is c-o-l-d.
Thigh highs, as well as garter belts and girdles to hold up stockings, are a fine-tuned form of torture. I had to wear that when I was a teen-ager...God bless pantyhose for rescuing me from popped garters and sagging hose!

Put me in the anti-hose camp. I wear it on rare occasions, but I don't even think I have a pair that fits me atm.

I see a LOT of people going without pantyhose that should be wearing them. Many of them are silly women 40 and over trying to look young. Yes, that road map of veins on your feet and back of your legs is really going to make everyone mistake you for a High School Musical castmember.
And I agree, going bare legged in the winter is EFFING COLD.
Also: wearing a full suit and heels without hose looks really ridiculous. Dress with a jacket you can maybe get away with, but full suit no way.

Yep. They're always too long for me and reach pretty much up to my boobs to fit without bunching...my mother made me wear them on Sundays and such, but once I got to college I ditched them. I realize at some point I'll need to get over it, but right now I'm 24 and once again a student...there are very few occasions where I know I need them and I fully intend to put them off for as long as possible.
Plus, I live in Alabama. If it's ever THAT cold, I have pants options for dressy occasions. Usually I just brave it.

Try Blister Block from Band-Aid brands. It's a little stick that you rub on like a deodorant on areas that may blister that protects those areas. Works like a charm!

Honestly I don't care if I have a road map of veins on my legs. They're my legs, and your opinion of them doesn't matter. No one 'should' or 'shouldn't' be wearing hose, heels, tennis shoes, jeans, stretch pants, or any item of clothing in public.
Also, hose do not keep my legs warm. Tights maybe. Hose, no.

It's custom, that's my point. I just never have been inconvenienced by it. I wear my other shoes after Labor Day. *shrug*

And if one is truly polite, one would never go "OMG YOU'RE WEARING WHITE SHOES". That would be rude.
And my take on hose - personally, I like my midriff fat to be locked and loaded, so I'm all for control top panty hose for dressing up - makes my middle-aged legs look better, and my tummy less obvious, so hooray!

I like that I went away for several days and came back to a 4 page discussion on cultural clothing norms that started as question about shoes. This is why I enjoy GC.
(btw, I didn't end up wearing those shoes.)
