I actually get why because you don't want the chapter associated with underage drinking and if you are 21 you want to look cute when you go out but it still is a rule that walks a fine line, if a girl does get wasted and is 18 ppl still know she is a XY. Nanners52674, I can have one of my current sorority friends get on here and tell you they don't wear letters when they go out. Your little attitude is what makes girls not want to join a sorority because you make it like it is a privilege to join and only a certain kind of girl is good enough to be you, when it is something anyone should join for a bond of friendship and fun.
Alright, benefit of the doubt for one moment.

The "policy" of not allowing people to drink in letters is frequently implemented at the chapter level and is sometimes supported purely by tradition. Your experience, however, does not make it a universal fact. For many, avoiding drinking while in letters is something they choose to do, but it is not something they are required to do.

Regarding the bolded, you can take your attitude and trot on back to your mama. It is my privilege to be a member. It is my privilege to have sisters. It is their privilege to have me as a member. That's how this works. "Friendship and Fun" are not in my motto.

LOL. I love how the benefit of the doubt was in paragraph 1 and not paragraph 2.

ETA: I hope the OP got her topic addressed to her satisfaction. LOL. As for the other topic in this thread, I really don't understand why it's so hard for some people to grasp. Tradition isn't synonymous with "rule" and "universal." You need to know what the "rules" are for your GLO (not just for the chapters that you know about) and don't even BEGIN to hypothesize about and try to enforce the "rules" for other GLOs.

You're missing my point. I can get on here and tell you my org has a policy on it because I'm a member of a sorority. Since you're not you can't actually comment on it. You know that, hence why you are offering to get a friend to prove you right. Just sit down and shut up.

And if you do go through recruitment I hope your lovely know it all about greek life attitude shines through to all the chapters.

You don't have to experience something to know it is a fact. I didn't experience the Titanic but I know it sank. Agzg as for points being made since no one has been to every single chapter in America it is just opinions as each of you said I have no proof these are rules you have no proof they aren't. Traditions are unspoken rules. It isn't a rule to hold the door for a women or call your teacher Mrs. Jones but we do. Atleast at U. Memphis in my next door neighbors pledge binder from fall 08 one rule is no letters when going out. It doesn't have to turn into a catty battle just because each of you think you are right.

Bless your heart dear, look at the quoted part. At Memphis they are not allowed to go out in letters. At my school it was a campus panhellenic rule. What the other posters are trying to tell you is that rules such as not going out in letters and no smoking are campus and chapter specific. It may seem to you that everyone has these rules because they are pretty common in the south, but that is more of a regional/ tradition thing. I have read the DDD bylaws completely and there is no rule that saws we cannot drink or smoke in our letters. I choose not to because that was our campus rule and old habits die hard. Please think before you decide to argue and antagonize the posters here. As a PNM you really have no idea what you are talking about, even if your mother is greek. You need to just sit back, read the helpful advice on this site, and be quiet. There are many southern sorority alumnae and actives that post on and read this site. You would hate to say something that could damage your recruitment.

Now if that doesn't make you smile, you might be a cyborg.

I distinctly remember rules in our chapter bylaws that stated that we could neither drink beer out of the bottle nor walk around with a cigarette.

LOL.

(I was going to mess up the above quotes but messed up quotes are too annoying to do on purpose.)

In the end, is it really worth continuing the fight to stop sisters from wearing letters where they see fit? Is the complaining sister actually feeling any negative consequences from the event in question? If not, it probably wasn't big of a deal as she thought it was. In the end, she doesn't own those letters any more than the other members of her chapter. She can choose to bring it up again, but she already brought it up once, and the other members didn't side with her. Voicing her concerns again may sound like sour grapes.

I disagree that wearing your letters to a rally or when handing out flyers implies that the organization supports the cause. I saw plenty of letters at Obama rallies during the last election season and the only thing I thought was, "Typical, liberal college students."
